New depth chart reveals surprises

The University of Louisville football team released the official depth chart for the 2008 season opener against Kentucky Monday morning. A close examination of the newly released depth chart reveals a few surprises. InsideTheVille.com takes a closer look at the Cardinals projected lineup against the rival Wildcats.

***Freshman Dexter Heyman is listed as the starter at strongside linebacker; James Bryant is list second.

***Mozell Axson, who entered fall camp as the starting middle linebacker, isn't listed on the two-deep depth chart. Junior college transfer Antwon Canady, a late addition to Louisville's 2008 recruiting class, is listed as the starter for the season opener while James Bryant is listed No. 2.

***Heyman and Canady won't be the only newcomers in the starting lineup at linebacker against Kentucky. Another JUCO transfer, Jon Dempsey, is listed as the starter on the weakside ahead of Chris Campa, who opened fall camp No. 1.

***Freshman Chris Philpott has apparently won both the placekicker and kickoff duties over Purdue sophomore transfer Tim Dougherty. Philpott will be replacing record-setting kicker Art Carmody.

***With Scott Long out with an ankle injury, sophomores Doug Beaumont and Troy Pascley are listed as the starting wide receivers for the Kentucky game. Josh Chichester, a redshirt freshman, and senior Chris Vaughn, are listed as the No. 2's on the depth chart. Trent Guy, who remains questionable for the opener, is listed No. 3.

***Sophomore Pete Nochta and converted senior linebacker Johnnie Burns are listed 1-2 at tight end on the depth chart. Rock Keys, a talented junior college transfer, is listed on the third string.

***Maurice Mitchell and L.D. Scott are listed as the starting defensive ends. William Savoy, who opened fall camp No. 1 on the depth chart, isn't listed.

***Latarrius Thomas, who missed last season with a knee injury, has regained his starting job at strong safety. He'll be backed by junior college transfer Josh Wiley.

***Bilal Powell is listed as the kick returner; Doug Beaumont punt returner.

***Dexter Heyman and Chris Philpott are the only true freshman listed on the two-deep depth chart; linebacker Keith Baker, corner Kardell Dunning and defensive end Greg Scruggs are listed on the three deep and could see action.
