Signing Day Notebook

Which Louisville signee did Rick Pitino say would help the Cardinals on the recruiting trail in the future? Why does the Louisville coach believe Mike Marra is the best high school shooter he's ever seen? InsideTheVille.com has the answers to those questions and more in this addition of the 'Notebook.'

Siva: Future recruiter?
Peyton Siva is a talented basketball player. According to Rick Pitino, he's also an extremely popular guy.

"Peyton talks to every great player in America by text or email," Pitino said. "It's unbelievable. Anytime we call a junior (it's) 'I just got off the phone with Peyton or I just spoke with Peyton.'

Pitino has high points for Siva both on the court, and -- in recruiting?

"He knows everybody and he's got a great personality so we expect him to be a terrific leader for us down the road," Pitino said. "Peyton Siva not only is a great basketball player but he's very similar to some of our guys here. He'll be a great recruiter for this program because he's an outgoing guy."

Marra best shooter ever?
Rick Pitino heaped strong praise on 6'4 SG Mike Marra Wednesday, calling him the "best shooter I've seen."

"The one thing that sticks out about him – I've been recruiting a long time – he's the best high school shooter I've seen in my life," Pitino said. "That's obviously quite a statement. But he has NBA range, he gets it off quickly and he has perfect form and perfect arch."

Coach, is he really a better shooter than Travis Ford? Tony Delk? Taquan Dean?

"He's the best (shooter) I've seen," Pitino reaffirmed. "I've never seen a guy who could stand out a foot or two beyond NBA range and very comfortably with perfect form and knock it down.

"He has the typical attitude of shooter. If he misses 4 or 5 in a row it doesn't bother him he just keeps shooting."

While he's got the shooting down, Marra needs to work on his ball-handling and defense to get ready for life in the Big East.

"Now he has to get the rest of his game to catch up to his shooting prowess," Pitino said.

Assistants getting it done

Richard Pitino

Since coming to Louisville last year, assistants Richard Pitino and Walter McCarty have been getting it done on the recruiting trail. Last year, the Cardinals signed a Top 5 recruiting class nationally. This year, Louisville has followed up with another Top 20 effort. Pitino and McCarty are big reasons for Louisville's success on the recruiting trail.

"Richard and Walt work extremely well together. I think Richard has taught Walt all the things necessary that goes into recruiting and Walt walks in with the big reputation," Pitino said. "He just had to learn the tough parts of recruiting. And Stevie Mass is the hammer in the metropolitan area of New York and New Jersey."

Pitino played a big role in helping land all four Louisville recruits. McCarty got Kyle Kuric last year and helped get an early commitment from 2010 star center Jeremy Tyler.

"It's a great staff for recruiting," Pitino said. "What they understand more than anything else is how significant it is to bring in kids that want to work hard."
