Latu next for Louisville?

Pauli Latu, a 6-1, 290-pound defensive tackle from Arizona Western C.C., was one of two junior college prospects to visit Louisville over the weekend. The other, Preston Pace, verbally committed to the Cardinals. Will Latu follow suit?

Pauli Latu (pronounced pow-lee la-too) was one of two junior college prospects who made official visits to Louisville last weekend. The Cardinals also hosted Butte (CA) CC defensive back Preston Pace. Pace committed to the Cardinals during his visit. It appears Louisville has a very good chance of landing Latu, too.

"I'm sure they're in (his) top two along with North Texas," Arizona Western CC coach Tom Minnick said. ""North Texas has offered him. Tennessee was interested but they really haven't gotten back to us lately. Nevade-Reno was looking at him. Those (schools) in the WAC are looking at him."

Latu originally signed with Utah out of Hunter High School in West Valley City, Utah. Latu redshirted in 2006 at Utah before transferring to Arizona Western in 2007. He graduate from AWCC in December and will have two years of remaining eligibility.

"He was at Utah and he transferred here," Minnick said. "I'm new here and I don't know the whole situation but he doesn't want to go back to Utah."

Latu was a 2005 high school All-American and a two-time all-state selection.

"He gets after it and he's quick," Minnick said. "He's a very quick kid. He moves around on the defensive front and gets after it. He can play inside or outside. He played outside for us – he played a little bit inside. He's a tough kid."

Latu was a preseason junior college All-American in 2008.

"He had a pretty good season," Minnick said. "He was a preseason All-American coming into the season. We had some pretty good defensive front kids in the league that beat him out for all-conference. But he played well and did some good things for us."
