NOTES:

  • Improvement Over a Year Ago -- Although it's the early stages of the season, the Cardinals have shown notable improvement in many facets over a year ago. U of L has shot better in all areas, including seeing its free throw percentage rise to 76.1 percent -- best in C-USA -- from 63.2 percent at the line last season, the poorest in 40 years. The Cards have been above 70 percent at the line in all seven games this year, a mark they reached just nine times all last season. The Cardinals have a +10.0 average rebounding margin, up from -0.6 a year ago. U of L has outrebounded six of its seven foes and trailed by only one in the board battle it did not win.

  • Stone Honored as C-USA and ESPN.com National Player of the Week -- University of Louisville center Marvin Stone was honored as the ESPN.com national player of the week and the Conference USA Player of the Week for games between Dec. 15-22.

  • Gaines Moves Up on Scoring List -- Reece Gaines ranks 17th on the all-time U of L scoring list with 1,508 career points and can move up a notch with five points. Only Pervis Ellison (1985-89), DeJuan Wheat (1993-97) and Darrell Griffith (1976-80) -- U of L's top three career scorers -- scored more in their initial three seasons for the Cardinals than Gaines' 1,371 career points. Gaines' 673 points last year was the third-most ever for a Louisville player in a single season and his 21.0 scoring average marked only the 10th time a Cardinal has averaged 20 points or better in a season. He scored 20 or more points on 19 occasions last year and has reached that mark in three of seven games this season.

  • Myles Remains Force on Boards -- Ellis Myles has grabbed 12 or more rebounds in three of the Cardinals' seven games and is second in Conference USA with an 9.6 rebounding average. In the latest NCAA statistical rankings from Dec. 16, Myles was second nationally with a 12.3 average at the time. His 16 rebounds against Air Force in U of L's opener was his third highest career rebounding total. Myles ranked third in C-USA in rebounding last season (9.3) and was among the nation's top 40. He has 18 career double-digit rebounding efforts.
