Louisville, which finished 5-7 last season, is scheduled to return 49 letterwinners, including 16 starters (nine on offense and seven on defense). Louisville plays Indiana State in the home and season opener on Sept. 5 before taking a week off to begin a stretch of 11 consecutive weeks with games.
After a week off on Sept. 12, the Cardinals will face their toughest road trip of the season. Louisville travels to Lexington, Ky. to face the Wildcats of Kentucky on September 19. Winners of the Liberty Bowl and three straight bowls, the Wildcats have won the last two meetings in the series, including a 40-34 win over the Cardinals at Commonwealth Stadium in 2007 - the Cardinals last trip to Lexington.
Louisville will face the 2009 Sugar Bowl champions and the nation's only undefeated team last season with a trip to Salt Lake City to face Utah on September 26. The Cards' and Utes met in Louisville in 2007 with Utah winning, 44-35.
The BIG EAST Conference campaign opens for the Cardinals with a nationally-televised Friday night visit to Papa John's Cardinal Stadium by Pittsburgh on October 2. The game will be shown live on ESPN2.
The Cardinals resume a long-standing rivalry with Southern Mississippi when the Golden Eagles visit Papa John's Cardinal Stadium on Saturday Oct. 10. It will be the first meeting between the two schools since 2002.
The Cardinals will play their final non-conference game of the year on Halloween (Oct. 31) when Arkansas State comes to Papa John's Cardinal Stadium for the first time. The Cardinals will travel to Morgantown on Saturday, November 7 to face West Virginia before coming home the following Saturday to host Syracuse on Nov. 14. Louisville will play its final road game of the year on Saturday, November 21, when the Cardinals travel to Tampa to face the Bulls of South Florida before ending the regular season on Saturday, November 28 against Rutgers at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.
