Summers and Whitt named coaches
Mike Summers has been tabbed by Head Coach Bobby Petrino as offensive line coach and Joe Whitt, Jr. will coach defensive backs at the University of Louisville next season.
Summers has a wealth of experience at the Division 1 level having served nearly 20 years as a top level assistant coach. Summers most recently served as offensive line coach for the Ohio Bobcats (2001-02) of the Mid American Conference under Brian Knorr. Prior to his stint in Ohio, Coach Summers served as Tight Ends coach and recruiting coordinator at Oklahoma State in 2000. Summers served as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at the University of the South (1997-99), heading up an offense that ranked fifth in the nation in rushing yards per game and second in the conference in total offense.
Summers served as offensive coordinator at Oregon State (1990-96) leading the Beavers to four consecutive PAC-10 rushing titles. He was named Top Offensive Backfield Coach in the PAC-10 in 1993 and 1994. Summers was the offensive coordinator at Northern Illinois (1985-89) and his offenses established 51 school records and set seven NCAA records during his stint as O.C. He served as offensive line coach to Jackie Sherrill at Texas A&M (1982-84) and began his career as a quarterbacks and running backs coach at Kentucky.
Summers received his bachelor's degree from Georgetown College in 1978 and added a graduate degree from the University of Kentucky in 1980. He and his wife Kathy have a 18 year-old daughter, Amy.
Joe Whitt, Jr., the son of long time Auburn defensive assistant coach Joe Whitt, served last year as the wide receivers coach at the Citadel. Whitt, a former walk-on wide receiver and special teams member at Auburn (1998-99) was a student assistant at Auburn prior to taking the wide receivers position at The Citadel.
Whitt is a graduate of Auburn University with a degree
in general liberal arts.
