Could this be UofL's new Defensive Coordinator?
Was Coach Petrino's hiring of first year Citadel wide receivers coach Joe Whitt, Jr., a telling sign of who would be named the new Defensive Coordinator at the University of Louisville?
The belief here is that it very well could be. You see, Joe Whitt, Jr., is the son of long time Auburn defensive assistant Joe Whitt, the man commonly referred to as the "Dean" of the Auburn coaching staff. Whitt joined former Auburn Head Coach Pat Dye's staff as outside linebackers coach in 1981 and has spent the past 21 years on Auburn's defensive staff under three different head coaches. Whitt, known as a great recruiter, certainly has the resume, experience and recruiting contacts in the deep south to make the jump to coordinator at the major college level. And at 53, this may be Whitt's last and best opportunity to make the leap to defensive coordinator at the major college level.
During Whitt's tenure, Auburn has had great defensive success. Since joining the staff in 1981, the Tigers have won four SEC Championships and played in 14 bowl games. 16 of Whitt's former players have gone on to play in the NFL, including the #1 pick in the 1988 NFL draft, Aundrey Bruce. Whitt has coached numerous All-SEC and All-America selections and the Tigers have led the SEC in rushing defense three times and total defense once during Whitt's years as an assistant coach.
Auburn plays Wednesday in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando, FL against Penn State. We should find out the answer soon after the game.
Joe Whitt was born March 19, 1949 in Mobile, AL. Whitt is married to the former Ethelrine Pollard and have two children, daughter, Nakesha, 24, and son Joseph , 23.

Another note about possible defensive coaches
Auburn defensive line coach Don Dunn is originally from Louisville. He might be a prime candidate for a similar spot on new UofL coach Bobby Petrino's staff. Dunn has many years of Division 1 coaching experience and would be an excellent addition to any defensive staff.
