Dwayne White, the University of Louisville's career sack leader, declared for the NFL Draft today. White's announcement does not comes as surprise although his departure will leave a huge void on the defensive line.
White, from Marbury, AL, burst onto the scene as a redshirt freshman and started the last nine games of the season racking up 52 tackles, 17 tackles for loss and registering 12 sacks to earn Third-team Freshman All-America honors and C-USA All-Freshman honors. As a sophomore, White led the Cards to it's second consecutive C-USA title and the Liberty Bowl Championship while recording 86 tackles, 23 tackles for loss and 15 sacks and was named C-USA Defensive Player of the Year. As a junior, White often played injured and battled double teams the entire year. As a result his production and draft status dropped a bit. This season, White racked up 57 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. Not bad for most but still down over his previous year's production.
White, who has been compared to Bruce Smith by some, will be sought for his ability to get up field and rush the passer. According to Tony Pauline, TheInsiders.com NFL Draft expert, White is an explosive pass rusher that gets constant penetration behind the line of scrimmage. However, Pauline also believes there are some question marks about White's effectiveness at the next level. According to Pauline, White may be limited in the number of schemes he will be effective in at the next level due to size limitations. Pauline also believes that White is often handled at the point by a single blocker and tends to wear down over the course of the game.
Still, White is projected to be picked among the first 60 players chosen in the draft this year. If he's to go higher, according to Pauline, he will need super workouts to improve his stock based on his performance last year.
