Strong Second Half leads Cards past DePaul

Louisville head coach Rick Pitino was grimacing on his way to the locker room at halftime in Wednesday's match up with DePaul (10-5, 2-2), but his No. 9-ranked Cardinals responded in the second half against the Blue Demons and pulled away for a 71-43 victory in front of 19,219 fans in Freedom Hall.

"DePaul is a tough, hard nosed basketball team," Pitino said. "We just had more numbers than they did and our defense is as hard working as any team I've coached."

Louisville trailed 15-13 after a dunk by Andre Brown with 8:22 left in the first half before the Cards went on an 18-8 run to take a 31-23 lead at the end of the first half.

The Cards exploded in the second half and outscored coach Dave Leitao's squad 40-20, while shooting 61.5 percent in the period.

"We tried to control their rhythm down a little bit," said Leitao.  "As I told our guys, when you play a team of this magnitude, you can't afford to make any mental or physical errors."

The Cards opened the second half by outscoring DePaul 13-4. After a dunk by Quemont Greer to open the stanza, Marvin Stone scored, Erik Brown hit a three-point bucket, Kendall Dartez took a rebound and flew across the lane for a basket and then Taquan Dean and Bryant Northern hit three's as Louisville raced to a 44-27 lead.

Louisville would go on another run after Andre Brown's two free throws, as the Cardinals outscored DePaul 9-2 over the next four plus minutes to lead 54-33, and back-to-back baskets from Ellis Myles and Francisco Garcia gave the Cardinals a 58-35 lead with 5:02 left and U of L never looked back.

"I'm real happy with our guys because of the extraordinary effort," said Pitino. "We shot 61 percent in the second half, which enabled us to pressure them, get out on the break more and we only turned it over 12 times."

Gaines led the Cardinals with 14 points, while Brown and Garcia each added 10.

The Blue Demons were led by Andre Brown who scored 16 points and pulled down 14 rebounds.

The Cards next game will be at Tennessee on Saturday as they battle the Volunteers in Knoxville at 5 p.m. on ESPN.

Notes:

Louisville held its 10th straight opponent below 40% shooting from the field.  The Blue Demons shot on 34% overall and made only 1-9 three point attempts for 11%.

Louisville held DePaul's leading scorer 6'9 Sam Hoskin (14.8) scoreless for the game.  Hoskin was limited to just one rebound as well.

Louisville's 5-0 start in Conference USA play is its best start since joining the league in 1995-96.
