6'10 Dwight Howard's coach gives ITV an update
Last week, University of Louisville Head Coach Rick Pitino was in Atlanta, GA to see two of the top junior big men in the nation go head to head. One of those big men, 6'10 Dwight Howard of Southwest Atlanta Christian has been drawing considerable interest from the Louisville coaching staff since last fall. In fact, University of Louisville Assistant Coach Mic Cronin made a special trip to watch Howard workout last fall in Atlanta.
Howard, ranked the nation's #1 junior power forward prospect by TheInsiders.com is an agile big man with excellent ball skills and a huge upside. Southwest Atlanta Christian Head Coach Courtney Brooks talked with Inside theVille.com about Coach Pitino's visit last week and Howard's recruitment.
With Pitino in the stands last week, Howard squared off against Landmark Christian and 6'10 junior center Randolph Morris, TheInsiders.com #5 junior center prospect in the nation and performed well with Pitino watching intently from the stands.
Howard tossed in 23 points and pulled down 10 boards against Landmark Christian and was impressive in the open court displaying his tremendous ball handling ability and open court skills.
According to Brooks the Cards have been sending letters and recruiting mail to Howard since the fall and have shown significant interest in Howard.
Howard was, "really excited and flattered by Coach Pitino's presence," Brooks told ITV of Coach Pitino's visit last week.
According to Brooks, Coach Pitino is appealing to Howard because, "He's known for developing players for the NBA."
Brooks described Howard as, "a 4 [power forward] with a pinch of 3 [small forward] in him."
Brooks noted that Howard was a tremendous ball handler for a player his size. "He can initiate our fast break and set up our offense," Brooks explained.
Brooks told ITV Howard's biggest strengths are his, "versatility and rebounding...he's a tremendous rebounder," Brooks emphasized. Brooks noted that Howard averaged 10 rebounds as a Freshman, 14 rebounds as a Sophomore and is averaging 16 rebounds this season.
Brooks compared Howard to former UK star and Pitino player, Jamal Mashburn, "with a couple more inches," Brooks said. "He's the same type player in that he can step out on the perimeter and also play under the basket," Brooks explained.
With a player as talented as Howard, what part of his game still needs improvement?
"He needs to improve his shooting," Brooks said. Brooks noted that Howard was shooting 32% from the three point line this season.
Brooks also had high praise for 6'10 center Randolph Morris of Landmark Christian. Morris also had 23 points in the game last week with Pitino in attendance.
"Randolph is a pure center and his game is power," assessed Brooks.
According to Brooks, Howard will attend the Adidas ABCD once again this July and following the camps he and his parents will sit down and narrow the list.
Brooks said that he didn't expect Howard to make a college decision until next fall and would likely take several visits before doing so.
