Telep: Cards major player for Mike Williams

Last Friday, Louisville Head Coach Rick Pitino was in Camden, AL to see 6'8 junior forward Mike Williams, a consensus top 20 player in the class of 2004. Dave Telep gives us an update on Williams heated recruitment.

Williams Draws Great Crowds

Wilcox Central head coach Mark Dukes probably couldn't be more elated. His team sits at 21-4 and already won enough games in their area to host the post-season tournament.

Meanwhile, Dukes' star junior recruit Mike Williams is having a big season. He's averaging 28 points and 14 boards to go with 2 blocks, a pair of steals and four assists.

"His play and his leadership and work habits in practice and games ... he's been phenomenal," Dukes said of one of the best forward prospects in the country and a lock member of our post-season Top 20. Dukes said Williams' athleticism has been better than previous seasons.

"I will say that his acrobatic ability and ability to leap is coming out. His style of jumping and dunking has improved. He's got more of a killer instinct on the court."

Williams' college list is still pretty lengthy at this juncture. Louisville, Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Alabama, Duke and Mississippi State are rumored to be the major players.

Rick Pitino, Billy Donovan, Mark Gottfried, Rick Barnes and Leonard Hamilton of Florida State have already been in to see him. Reportedly Duke's Mike Krzyzewski will watch Williams in the very near future. Pitino was in last week, Gottfried comes back on Tuesday and Coach K could very well be in the mix on Friday.

If you talk to a lot of people about Mike Williams, everyone seems intent on speaking about him off the court as well. "You watch him play and that'll show his character," Southeast Pump and Run coach Mark Komara said. "His family says a lot about him. He's everything you can ask for. I guess that's why Duke has come so hard lately."

Makes sense to us.
