Three guards out against Charlotte

Rick Pitino already had enough injury-related issues with Preston Knowles and Peyton Siva recovering from hand/wrist injuries. Now, another Louisville guard is out with injury for tomorrow's game against Charlotte.

Rick Pitino announced Friday afternoon that senior guard Jerry Smith won't play Saturday against Charlotte because of a foot/ankle (achilles) issue.

"It's not a serious injury," said Rick Pitino. "He fell down [in practice] and strained his achilles."

Reginald Delk is expected to replace him in the starting lineup and Pitino said that reserve guards Kyle Kuric and Chris Brickley will play bigger roles against the 49ers.

Pitino was hoping to get Preston Knowles (sprained thumb) and Peyton Siva (sprained wrist) back for tomorrow's contest. Both players missed Wednesday's game against Stetson. Pitino said he expected Knowles and Siva back in the lineup for Charlotte and is "shocked" they won't.

"They would play hurt if they could, but the problem with both guys is that it's their shooting hand," Pitino said. "I think it would be frustrating if they were major and serious injuries. But these are minor injuries."

Pitino also said that George Goode will start at power forward tomorrow against the 49ers. Goode didn't play against Stetson as Rakeem Buckles made his first start. Buckles failed to score and had only two rebounds in 14 minutes.

"I hope we have five people [to play]...after today's practice," Pitino said. "It's not a good thing because it's taken continuity away from our practices. This will be life and death to win this game. We're going to need the crowd to get us over the hump in this one."
