Tigers (Refs) pound Cards, 80-73

The #4 Louisville Cardinals (19-3, 9-2) fell to Memphis (17-5, 8-3)last night at Freedom Hall 80-73. The loss was the Cards first at home and on national television this season.

Tigers Pound Glass, Cards for Upset

Anthony Burks scored 16 points and Memphis grabbed a 16 rebound advantage as the Tigers upset Louisville 80-73 in front of 19,786 fans in Freedom Hall.

"They just took us to the wood shed on the glass," said Louisville coach Rick Pitino. "When we had the chance to take control of the game we just kept letting them get second and third shots. Rebounding has been our Achilles heel all season and they (Memphis) deserved the victory tonight."

The Tigers (17-5, 8-3 Conference USA) out rebounded Louisville 47-31 and pulled down 20 offensive rebounds. It was an important win for Memphis and their NCAA tournament hopes Tigers head coach John Calipari was pleased.

"It was a nice win and a heck of a ballgame," Calipari said. "Both these teams fought like crazy. It was a good ball game."

The Tigers led 74-67 with 50 seconds left, when John Grice stepped to the free throw line. After making the first, he then made a throat-slashing gesture, drawing a technical foul.

Simeon Naydenov made both free throws to cut it to 69-75 and then Gaines hit 1 of two from the foul line with 43 seconds left to make it a five point game.

On Louisville's next possession Eric Brown was fouled by Grice and made both free throws to cut the lead to 75-72, but that was as close as the Cardinals would get.

Memphis hit 5 of 6 from the foul line in the last 20.2 seconds to ice the game.

Reece Gaines led all scorers 19 points, however he made only 5 of 18 from the field. Francisco Garcia added 17 and Marvin Stone 10.

The game was tightly officiated and saw 61 fouls called including technicals on Grice and Memphis Billy Richmond. Five players, including four from Louisville, fouled out of the game.

In addition to Burks 16, Memphis got 12 points and 11 rebounds from Chris Massie, his fifth straight double-double.

Next up for Louisville (19-3, 9-2) will be a visit to Cincinnati on Saturday.

Tip off from the Shoemaker Center will be 4 p.m. and the game will be televised on CBS.
