Strong's staff believes they've found such a playmaker in Miami (FL) Central wide receiver Charles Gaines.
The 5-foot-11 speedster recently made big waves at Florida's Friday Night Lights Camp, and projects as one of the top wide receiver prospects in the Sunshine State this season. Gaines, who missed five games last season due to injury, still caught 24 passes for 440 yards and eight touchdowns as a junior. Gaines made 35 receptions for 662 yards and eight touchdowns as a sophomore.
"Things are going fine with Louisville," Gaines said. "I like their program and I'm interested in their team. I like their coaching [staff]."
Louisville signed three players from Miami last year. Former Northwestern standouts Corvin Lamb and Michaelee Harris could see action this season as freshmen at running back and wide receiver, while Jamaine Brooks (Palmetto) could impact early at defensive tackle. Louisville assistant Clint Hurtt, a former coach and recruiting coordinator at Miami, is working the Miami-area hard for the Cardinals.
"I've been talking to [Hurtt] recently, like once or twice a week," Gaines said. "He's a nice coach and he has a nice personality. He said they're really interested in me and they're ready for me to come on up and check out the program and see how things are going up their so far."
Besides Louisville, Gaines also mentioned interest in UCF. The Knights have enjoyed success recently recruiting in Miami and landed stars Jeffrey Godfrey, one of Gaines' former teammates, and Torrian Wilson (Northwestern) last year.
"I'm interested in Coach Hurtt and the Louisville program and Coach [Dave] Kelly [wide receiver coach] at UCF," Gaines said. "I like UCF's campus, their coaches and how they're trying to step up and do better things. There are a lot of schools that I'm interested in and I haven't made my mind up which one I want to go to."
While Louisville and UCF appear solidly in the mix for Gaines' services, the talented receiver isn't planning a college decision any time soon.
"I'm not trying to get too involved in the [recruiting process] right now," Gaines said. "I'd like to break it down to two or three schools and take some visits during the season. Then by the end [of the season] I'll [make] my final pick."
