Cards face Austin Peay in NCAA first round

The #4 seeded Louisville Cardinals (24-6, 11-5) will play #13 seeded Austin Peay (23-7, 13-3) in the NCAA East Region on Friday in Birmingham, AL.

The Governors tied for first place with Morehead State for the regular season Ohio Valley Conference title and defeated Tennessee Tech, 63-57 to earn the OVC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.  Austin Peay enters the NCAA on quite a roll and are playing with great confidence.  They've won 16 of their last 17 games and also beat #25 Memphis at the Pyramid to open the season.

The Govs are led by 6'6 junior forward Adrian Henning (15.4, 7.1) and 6'2 sophomore guard Anthony Davis (14, 4.7).  Henning shoots 56% from the field and has made 22-54 three point shots on the season.  Davis is shooting 41% from the field and has made 32 threes this season.

Austin Peay, which starts three guards (Davis, Gipson, Weirzba), plays nobody over 6'8 in their regular rotation.  6'8, 210 starting center Josh Lewis, a junior from Lexington, KY (Lafayette HS), provides the Governors an inside presence, averaging 12.6 points, and 7.0 rebounds per game.  Lewis has also blocked 80 shots this season.

6'1 Corey Gipson and 6'4 Rhet Weirzba provide the outside shooting for the Governors.  Gipson is shooting just 34% from the field this season but has made 54 threes and Wierzba is just behind with 52 made triples.

6'2 freshman guard Maurice Hampton for Russellville, KY, 6'0 sophomore Levi Carmichael, and 6'9 freshman Zac Schadler provide minutes off the bench for the Goveroners.  Hampton and Carmichael both see about 15 minutes per game off the pine and Schadler has played in 24 games this season.  Hampton leads the reserves with 4.5 points per game.

The winner of the Louisville-Austin Peay first round game will play the survivor of the Mississippi State-Butler game on Sunday.
