Dupree invited to slam dunk contest

Ronald Dupree, who thrilled crowds at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center over the last four years with his spectacular dunks, will showcase his dunking ability on the national stage next week.<br><br>LSU's star forward has been invited to participate in the College Slam Dunk Championships in New Orleans.

The contest will be held at 7 p.m. on April 3 at the Alario Center in New Orleans as a kickoff to the NCAA Final Four. The contest, which also includes a 3-point shootout, will be televised to a national audience by ESPN.


Some of the college stars invited to participate in the event include Duke's Dahntay Jones, Oklahoma's Hollis Price, Notre Dame's Matt Carroll, Indiana's Tom Coverdale, Mississippi State's Derrick Zimmerman and Tulane's Byron Parker.


Dupree capped his career as one of only four players in LSU history ranked in the school's top 10 in both scoring and rebounds. Dupree finished sixth in school history with 1,726 points and eighth in rebounds with 907. Dupree, a three-time All-Southeastern Conference selection, led the Tigers with 15.8 points a contest in 2003.


Past participants at the College Slam Dunk and 3-point Championships include current NBA superstars Gary Peyton, Damon Stoudamire, Michael Finley, Allen Houston, Eddie Jones and Steve Nash.


This year's event will feature New Orleans professional athletes as the celebrity judges. Expected to judge the contest is Baron Davis and Robert Traylor of the New Orleans Hornets and Deuce McAllister of the New Orleans Saints.
