Sheppard's Last Stand

Go inside to hear linebacker Kelvin Sheppard talk about staying for a fifth year, his role as a leader on a 9-1 team and his thoughts on the four teams ahead of LSU in the BCS.

On deciding to return to LSU after contemplating a leave for the NFL after his junior season…

“I would say it’s the right choice, I guess. I don’t know what would have happened if I would have decided to leave. But coming back, I am happy with where I am and I am happy with where the team is at. If I could change anything it would be the Auburn game, of course. All in all we are 9-1, we are having a great year, we’re No. 5 in the country right now, so I think I made the right decision.”

On what his time at LSU has meant…

“I would hope it meant everything since I have been here five years and decided to come back. Saying that, it’s obviously meant a lot. I have enjoyed all my experiences. I’ve had some bad ones and good ones. I have been at the top of the country and at the bottom, so I know all ends of it. I’ve enjoyed it.”

“I meant like being unranked and being the national champion, I’ve been on both sides of it.”

On being a leader on a 9-1 team…

“It was fun. Every game was fun. Everyone’s gone out and gave 110-percent every game. Up to now we are having a very good year. I know a lot of teams wish they were in our position right now. So we are not exactly where we want to be, but nobody has there heads now. We are having a great year and everyone is having fun.”

Sheppard’s opinion of the four teams ahead of LSU in the BCS…

“One team that’s ahead of us beat us. I can’t say anything about them. Oregon is undefeated and putting up 50 points a game, so you can’t say anything about them. Boise they get it done every year. They win out every year. It’s just a matter of the computers and all that. The four teams above us, they deserve to be because they are unbeaten.”

The difference between this season and 2007…

“It’s an obvious difference. There wasn’t another team in our division that’s undefeated. Auburn got done what they needed to get done, and they deserve a chance to go on and play for the SEC Championship and National Championship.”

Comparing 2007’s team to this current team if they win against Ole Miss and Arkansas…

“If we go 11-1, it’s a better season than 10-2. Just the things that happened in this season on the other end doesn’t add up to be in the position that we ultimately want to be in.”
