LSU offered Mickey Johnson at Junior Day last season, and since then it’s been constant contact from coaches Ron Cooper and Brick Haley. Cooper recruits the Covington, La. area for the Tigers, while Haley, a defensive line coach, is after Johnson as his potential future position coach.
While the 6-foot-1, 310-pounder had initially planned to take his official visits to schools outside of the state, Johnson dialed up Cooper on Thursday and set his official for this weekend.
“I know it will be a good time with those guys in town,” said Johnson. “The coaches said that they were excited that this was the weekend I picked. When I talked to coach Cooper, he just seemed excited to get me over there.”
The trip will be the first in a string of trips before Johnson is forced to sign on the dotted line.
As for his stance with the Tigers, Johnson pointed to his relationship with Haley as a major selling point.
“I’ve been talking with coach Cooper because he is my main recruiter, but coach Brick calls me and all that,” he said. “We are building that relationship up already. We talk about everything from depth to what guys they could bring on in this class.
“We think a pull of Anthony Johnson, Timmy Jernigan and myself would be the best tackle group in the country.”
As for academics, the St. Paul’s School standout said that he is in the clear after his recent ACT.
“I am pulling up my GPA, and I’ve got a 21 on my last ACT, so I should be good to go without any worries,” said Johnson.
He will arrive to campus on Friday evening, and TigerSportsDigest.com will have more throughout the weekend.
