Standing Tall in Class 1A

LSU commitment Ronald Martin earned Class 1A First-Team All-State Honors from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, the perfect ending to a season that saw White Castle grab a state championship.

The first wave of All-State honors handed out last week saw White Castle’s Ronald Martin, the lone LSU commitment on the Class 1A list, grab First-Team honors as an athlete.

It was icing on the cake for Martin. Five days prior, White Castle captured a state championship with a 32-20 win over Ouachita Christian.

Hobbled by a high ankle sprain in the win, Martin, who played quarterback on offense throughout his senior campaign, was held to 22 yards rushing and 1-of-6 passing for 25 yards and a touchdown. Fortunately for the Bulldogs, running back Tyree Bracken turned out a 235-yard, two-touchdown night and the defense came up with five interceptions and five recovered fumbles.

While it wasn’t his night to carry the Bulldogs, Martin felt the weight of White Castle more than once this season.

After he picked up a scholarship offer and committed to LSU just prior to the start of the season, Martin saw his senior year get off to a rough start on Friday nights. By Sep. 24, the Bulldogs had dropped to 1-4.

By the state title game, White Castle had reeled off 11 straight wins.

In his 11 regular season games Martin rushed 67 times for 703 yards and 12 touchdowns and passed for 718 yards and eight touchdowns. Lined up at receiver sporadically throughout the year, Martin caught five passes for 204 yards and a touchdown. He totaled 78 tackles, 18 pass break ups and a fumble recovery for a touchdown on defense.

Recruited to LSU as a safety, Martin joins David Jenkins, Jalen Collins and Micah Eugene as the defensive backs that coach Ron Cooper has brought into the 2011 signing class.
