LSU signee de Vries inks with Red Sox

The ranks of LSU's 2001 baseball signing class were further depleted with the decision of Irvine, Calif., catcher Jonathan deVries to sign a contract with the Boston Red Sox. The pro team chose the pwer-hitting backstop in the third round of last month's Major League first-year player draft.

de Vries is the third member of the most recent LSU signing class to reach terms with a Major League team. Outfielder Chamar McDonald of Madison, Miss., signed with the Kansas City Royals soon after the draft, and outfielder Austin Nagle of Lake Charles-Barbe inked with the Oakland Athletics a week ago.

There now remains five LSU signees who have yet to sign contracts with the respective pro teams holding their rights. They are catcher Jonathan Zeringue of Thibodaux-E.D. White (Chicago White Sox, third round); outfielder Jay Mattow of Conway, Ark. (Chicago White Sox, fourth round); pitcher Chad Gaudin of Harahan-Crescent City (Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 34th round); and pitcher Jason Vargas of Apple Valley, Calif. (Minnesota Twins, 43rd round).
