Still in the shadows of National Signing Day, LSU assistant coach Billy Gonzales has been busy in the Sunshine State making inroads with 2012 talent.
Last week he added a new name to the LSU big board: Jessamen Dunker.
A 6-foot-6, 315-pounder out of Boynton Beach, Fla., Dunker began hearing from college coaches across the map just this month.
“We put together the junior highlight film and sent it out, then offers started coming,” he said. “I am hearing from tons of schools. It seems like they pop up out of nowhere.”
Dunker is up to 15 scholarship offers, ranging from the Southeastern Conference to the Atlantic Coast Conference. His latest pair, both of which arrived on Wednesday, came from Alabama and West Virginia.
LSU, led by Gonzales, dialed up Boynton Beach and extended their offer last week. Though Dunker said he’s unfamiliar with LSU’s campus environment now, a coming visit will provide him a first-hand look at the Tigers as they prepare for spring football.
“I am coming over there with my mom and sister for Mardi Gras because I have family that lives in Hammond, which isn’t far from Baton Rouge at all,” he said. “It will be in early March and we will probably stay for a few days. One of those days we will drive over to the LSU campus and see what it’s all about.
“I’m definitely excited to know more. I really hadn’t had time to do a lot of research on all these schools because I have my track season coming up. I went to Florida’s Junior Day and that was nice. I took a separate tour with Coach Muschamp and Coach Hill, so that was a cool experience. Now I just got to go see the other places. I will be calling coach Gonzales here soon to talk more about the LSU side and my trip.”
