After deciding to opt out of any summer camps, Airline High’s John Thomas entered his junior season under the radar.
When LSU tight ends coach Steve Ensminger spotted the 6-foot-7, 240-pounder during his evaluations in the area, Thomas was officially on LSU’s board.
After finishing the year with 30 catches for 575 yards and seven touchdowns, LSU pulled the trigger and sent Thomas a scholarship offer.
“Coach Frank (Wilson) called up to the school and talked with my coaches, then I got a hold of him and he told me they wanted me at LSU. It was pretty exciting. I wanted LSU to send me a scholarship, so it was nice knowing that it came.
“He said they had seen me in person and also liked my film, so that made them confident that I could play. After that they wanted to go ahead and offer.”
“We are ranked No. 4 in the state and play St. Paul’s in a playoff game (Friday),” he said. “I’ve been playing since we finished football, so I hadn’t done much recruiting stuff.
“The coaches at LSU want me to come down and visit. Coach Frank said I should get there as soon as I can. I will probably come with one of my coaches. They also want to see me down at camp, so we will set that up.”
