Scoring recap: LSU 49, NW State 3

A look at how the Tigers and Demons scored Saturday night.

SCORING RECAP

First quarter

LSU – DeAngelo Peterson 9 pass from Jarrett Lee (Drew Alleman kick), 8:03. DRIVE:  6 plays-67 yards-2:54. KEY PLAYS:  The Tigers came out firing, with Lee pumping a 43-yard pass to Rueben Randle on the first play. After that, Michael Ford got four consecutive carries for 20 yards before Lee hooked up with Peterson. LSU 7, Northwestern State 0

Second quarter

NORTHWESTERN STATE – John Shaughnessy 44 FG, 14:00. DRIVE: 6-12-2:25. KEY PLAYS:  The Demons gained a field-position advantage with a punt that pinned LSU deep and an 11-yard sack. That forced the Tigers to punt from their own 4 and Northwestern State got the ball at the 39. One first down got Shaughnessy close enough for the first points the Demons have ever scored against the Tigers. LSU 7, Northwestern State 3

LSU – Spencer Ware 1 run (Alleman kick), 9:50. DRIVE:  8-63-4:10. KEY PLAYS:  Ford ripped off 12- and 26-yard runs to quickly flip the field and Lee zipped a short throw to Randle that turned into a 15-yard pickup. Randle fumbled the ball, but it trickled out of bounds to allow the Tigers to maintain possession. After Ford carved out another first down, Ware came on for the 1-yard bull rush on second down. LSU 14, Northwestern State 3

LSU – Ware 6 run (Alleman kick), 8:33. DRIVE:  2-15-:30. KEY PLAYS:  LSU defensive tackle Michael Brockers got the ball back for the offense when he yanked down a Brad Henderson screen pass at the Demons’ 15. Two plays later, Ware took a pitch to the right side and darted in with little resistance. LSU 21, Northwestern State 3

LSU – Ford 3 run (Alleman kick), :20. DRIVE:  5-52-:30. KEY PLAYS:  After stuffing Northwestern State’s fourth-down gamble, LSU got the ball near midfield with 50 second to go before halftime. Operating with an up-tempo pace, the Tigers marched downfield behind Lee, who hit Odell Beckham Jr. for 12 yards, Ware for 9 and then Randle for 28 on a perfectly placed corner route that put the Tigers at the 3. Ford took an inside toss from there and scored easily. LSU 28, Northwestern State 3

Third quarter

LSU – Ford 7 run (Alleman kick), 12:39. DRIVE:  5-59-2:21. KEY PLAYS:  With Zach Mettenberger at the controls, LSU didn’t miss a beat as he found the mark on four passes for 44 yards. A facemask on NSU aided the cause and Ford glided in smoothly from the 7-yard-line. LSU 35, Northwestern State 3

LSU – Alfred Blue 4 run (Alleman kick), 2:36. DRIVE:  10-57-3:57. KEY PLAYS:  Beckham triggered the long drive with a 15-yard pickup on a reverse and Blue did most of the heavy lifting with six runs. Mettenberger for Kadron Boone and James Wright involved with passes that ate up 21 yards. LSU 42, Northwestern State 3

Fourth quarter

Kadron Boone: 1st career TD

LSU – Kadron Boone 19 pass from Zach Mettenberger (Alleman kick), 7:29. DRIVE:  15-68-8:13. KEY PLAYS:  LSU’s most time-consuming drive of the game consumed half of the final quarter with Blue and Jakhari Gore taking turns running most of the way. When the drive sputtered, Mettenberger lofted a pretty 19-yard fade pass to Boone in the left back corner of the end zone for the final points of the night. LSU 49, Northwestern State 3

Final score:  LSU 49, Northwestern State 3

Records:  No. 2 LSU 2-0, Northwestern State 1-1

Attendance:  92,405
