Week 3: TSD weekly staff picks

TigerSportsDigest.com's Rosetta, Dixon and Villere take a shot at picking this week's winners

Randy Rosetta

Last week: 15-5 (.750)

Season: 32-8 (.800)

LSU at Mississippi State: Both teams came into the season with defenses that had to grow up. The Tigers’ learning curve has gone much faster than the Bulldogs and that’s the difference…LSU 23, Mississippi State 16

Randy Rosetta

Auburn at Clemson: Is Auburn back from the dead or just pretty darn lucky again? Clemson is no place to visit with so many unanswered questions and a ton of venom with a losing streak against AU that dates back to the early 1970s…Clemson 35, Auburn 31

Ole Miss at Vanderbilt: The Commodores looked like they turned a corner last week with a come-from-behind win against UConn and Ole Miss scuffled to get past Southern Illinois. Still, the Rebels, as down as they are, still have a talent edge…Ole Miss 21, Vanderbilt 14

Coastal Carolina at Georgia: Playing close with two ranked opponents has toughened the Bulldogs up. They won’t have to worry about a close one this week against the Chanticleers…Georgia 44, Coastal Carolina 14

Tennessee at Florida: Wasn’t long ago that this was a must-see game in the SEC East race. It’s lost some luster with six straight Gators’ wins. But the Will Muschamp-Derek Dooley element adds some new spice, and both teams are off to good starts. As always, though, a tough defense trumps a productive offense…Florida 27, Tennessee 24

Navy at South Carolina: The defensively-challenged Gamecocks get a chance to face a predictable offense in Navy’s triple-option scheme. Whether that equates to a better performance remains to be seen…South Carolina 38, Navy 24

Louisville at Kentucky: Neither team has wowed anybody yet, with subpar wins against Sun Belt and MAC foes and a loss to a Sun Belt team between them. Somebody has to have bragging rights until basketball season commences…Kentucky 19, Louisville 13

North Texas at Alabama: Not much to see or say here…Alabama 59, North Texas 6

Troy at Arkansas: Nobody has slowed the Razorbacks down so far and the Trojans don’t appear to have the manpower to do so. Another romp for the Hogs before they jump into the SEC…Arkansas 56, Troy 21

Oklahoma at Florida State: Clearly the game of the week, this one – like LSU and Oregon – will elevate one team into the national championship hopefuls penthouse and leave the other with work to do. As good as the Sooners have been, they’re just 7-6 in road games against ranked foes outside the Big 12 under Bob Stoops…Florida State 27, Oklahoma 24

Boise State at Toledo: This looms as a tricky game for the Broncos, who have already hit the cruise control section of their schedule. The Rockets have stunned some BCS teams at home and just threw a huge scare into Ohio State last week. Boise ekes it out…Boise State 31, Toledo 28

West Virginia at Maryland: Depending on what togs Maryland wears and if West Virginia is in highlighter yellow, this game could have you wishing for a black-and-white TV. The football should be pretty good, though…Maryland 35, WVU 28

Washington at Nebraska: The Cornhuskers come in scratching their heads on defense after giving up 29 points vs. Fresno State. There’s good news, though: Washington has allowed 59 points during a 2-0 start…Nebraska 42, Washington 31

Michigan State at Notre Dame: Under the heading ‘Even a blind squirrel finds a nut,’ I’ll keep picking the Fighting Irish thinking they’ll eventually find a way to play a complete 60 minutes…Notre Dame 30, Michigan State 27

Texas at UCLA: The Longhorns are going through quarterbacks like potential conference affiliations, but they’re still in better shape than the Bruins under center. UCLA’s talent level will keep this close, but this is the breakthrough win UT has needed for a while…Texas 20, UCLA 14

Arizona State at Illinois: The Zooker always seems to pull one rabbit out of his coaching hat and this sets up as the one this season…Illinois 32, Arizona State 24

Ohio State at Miami: What-might’ve-been dominates the plot to this showdown of national powerhouse has-beens. The Hurricanes will have their renegade quarterback, though, and comes in more desperate than the Buckeyes…Miami 27, Ohio State 20

Utah at BYU: The Holy War is alive and well despite the two Beehive State teams going separate ways this season. Three of the Cougars’ last four games have been settled by a point, including a 17-16 loss to the Utes late last season. Expect a similar game this week…BYU 16, Utah 14

Stanford at Arizona: The Cardinal hasn’t found its groove yet in two lopsided but uninspiring victories. The Wildcats come in with a nasty taste after getting thumped at Oklahoma State last week. No upset here, though, just lots of (Andrew) Luck…Stanford 38, Arizona 24

Nicholls State at UL-Lafayette: Not sure if Troy and Co. will be on hand to talk alligator hunting techniques in this battle of the bayous. Won’t matter much to the team actually called the Cajuns…ULL 49, Nicholls State 17

Shea Dixon

Last week: 16-4 (.800)

Season: 34-6 (.850)

LSU at Mississippi State: The cowbells will be out in full effect on Thursday night in Starkville. Watch for LSU to ground and pound its way to a 1-0 start in SEC play…LSU 34, Mississippi State 20

Shea Dixon

Auburn at Clemson: AU has owned this series for the last 60 years. Despite a big night from Michael Dyer, that streak ends this weekend…Clemson 35, Auburn 31

Ole Miss at Vanderbilt: Can the Commodores grab a win in James Franklin’s SEC opener? The Rebels will start slow, but a late field goal allows Houston Nutt to escape with the win…Ole Miss 24, Vanderbilt 21

Coastal Carolina at Georgia: Coastal Carolina head coach David Bennett dominated the ESPN feeds after ranting about how his Chanticleers needed to be more like dogs and less like cats. Bennett, meet the Dawgs…Georgia 45, Coastal Carolina 10

Tennessee at Florida: Tennessee has looked good with Tyler Bray under center, but this is The Swamp – and Will Muschamp will have the Gators defense ready…Florida 35, Tennessee 24

Navy at South Carolina: Steve Spurrier grabbed a big road win over Georgia, and Marcus Lattimore picks up where he left off before taking a seat in the second half…South Carolina 27, Navy 10

Louisville at Kentucky: This battle of the in-state foes will be better in basketball. Joker Phillips will have his boys coached up for a big win over a struggling Cardinals team…Kentucky 27, Louisville 14

North Texas at Alabama: This will be a good chance for Alabama quarterbacks A.J. McCarron and Phillip Sims to get some extra reps…Alabama 56, North Texas 3

Troy at Arkansas: Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson will be back to the lineup after missing the second half of last week’s win over New Mexico with symptoms of a concussion…Arkansas 37, Troy 10

Does Landry Jones give top-ranked OU a big enough edge at FSU?

Oklahoma at Florida State: In the marquee game of the weekend, the Seminoles will win the turnover battle and put a question mark on Oklahoma’s plans for an appearance in the national title game…Florida State 27, Oklahoma 24

Boise State at Toledo: The Rockets almost snuck out a win over Ohio State last week, and now they get the No. 4-ranked Broncos at home. That said, something tells me Boise State coach Chris Peterson has his team focused…Boise State 38, Toledo 17

West Virginia at Maryland: The Mountaineers might be looking ahead to their bout with LSU, but it shouldn’t cost them the win…WVU 27, Maryland 21

Washington at Nebraska: He has struggled in the pass game, but Taylor Martinez will run wild against the Huskies…Nebraska 30, Washington 13

Michigan State at Notre Dame: Chip Kelly needs this win – badly. Away from the lights in Ann Arbor, the Irish get back on track against the other team from Michigan…Notre Dame 31, Michigan State 27

Texas at UCLA: Texas needs to find an identity on offense, and that might come with an unexpected name at quarterback. Look for another late-game comeback win…Texas 27, UCLA 21

Arizona State at Illinois: Vontaze Burfict will give the Illinois offense fits in this one. On the other side of the ball, it will be the Brock Osweiler Show for the Sun Devils…Arizona State 34, Illinois 31

Ohio State at Miami: The Hurricanes have plenty of going on off the field, but first-year coach Al Golden will want this win. Miami will be well-prepped for this one…Miami 28, Ohio State 27

Utah at BYU: This one doesn’t have the national appeal it has had in recent years, but it’s still an exciting battle for state bragging rights…BYU 35, Utah 28

Stanford at Arizona: Cardinal quarterback Andrew Luck is giving Arizona coach Mike Stoops nightmares this week…Stanford 30, Arizona 17

Nicholls State at UL-Lafayette: Mark Hudspeth has gathered some good talent into Lafayette. The Ragin' Cajuns will flex their muscles against Nicholls State this weekend…ULL 31, Nicholls State 10

Emily Villere

Last week: 17-3 (.850)

Season: 35-5 (.875)

LSU at Mississippi State: The Bulldogs will need more cow bell than originally planned when the Tigers come to town, and an LSU defense led by the honey badger, Tyrann Mathieu, will once again shut down their opponent...LSU 35 Misissippi State 21

Emily Villere

Auburn at Clemson: AU surprised the SEC by beating ranked Mississippi State last weekend, and as expected, the ACC will not be as strong an opponent...Auburn 35, Clemson 14

Ole Miss at Vanderbilt: The Rebels vs. the Commodores is a tossup. Let's just go with Ole Miss on this one…Ole Miss 28, Vanderbilt 21

Coastal Carolina at Georgia: The Bulldogs are in NEED of a win starting 0-2, losing to two ranked teams to begin an incredibly rocky season for Mark Richt. If they don't win against Big South member Coastal Carolina, well, let's just cross that bridge if we get to it...Georgia 35, Coastal Carolina 6

Tennessee at Florida: The Volunteers have put up 87 points in their first two games of the season, but SEC play against the Gators will give them their first loss of the season in a close one...Florida 31, Tennessee 28

Navy at South Carolina: The Gamecocks squeaked out a win against Georgia last week and coast through this week facing Navy...South Carolina 41, Navy 17

Louisville at Kentucky: The Cardinals looked weak against Florida International last weekend with the defense giving up 201 yards plus 2 TDs to the Panthers' T.Y. Hilton. The Wildcats will win this insttate rivalry even though they haven't looked too hot yet either this season...Kentucky 21, Louisville 14

North Texas at Alabama: Obviously the Crimson Tide wins this game using it as practice before opening up SEC play up against Arkansas the following week...Alabama 47, North Texas 9

Troy at Arkansas: The Razorbacks are looking to their Alabama game the next week and also use Troy as a tuneup looking to put up their third 50-point game this season...Arkansas 51, Troy 17

Oklahoma at Florida State: Even though the Sooners have had two weeks to prepare for the Seminoles, Jimbo Fisher's team will win the biggest game of the weekend, knocking off No. 1 Oklahoma in a squeaker...Florida State 31, Oklahoma 28

Boise State at Toledo: The Rockets gave Ohio State quite the scare last week, but the Broncos will have no problem with this one...Boise State 41, Toledo 6

West Virginia at Maryland: The Terrapins have had 12 days to prepare for the 18th-ranked Mountaineers and will use that and their home-field advantage to try and go 2-0. But West Virginia wins and will meet LSU at 3-0 the next week...WVU 32, Maryland 24

Washington at Nebraska: It took the Huskers all the way until the fourth quarter to get something going to beat Fresno State last week. Nebraska will play a full four quarters at home this weekend to top Washington...Nebraska 37, Washington 14

Michigan State at Notre Dame: The Irish look to beat a team from Michigan this week after a last-minute loss to the Wolverines last week. Not much luck in the state of Michigan for Notre Dame and their good fortune will not be present again this weekend...Michigan State 31, Notre Dame 14

Texas at UCLA: The Longhorns might be 2-0, but their quarterback shuffle is not an effective game plan. I pick UCLA with the upset of the 23rd-ranked Horns...UCLA 24, Texas 21

Arizona State at Illinois: The Sun Devils won't have to go into overtime to beat the Fighting Illini, but they can't look too far ahead to their game against USC next weekend...Arizona State 35, Illinois 21

Ohio State at Miami: Wow, the jokes for this game will just keep coming. The “Ineligible bowl” will feature, well not much player wise. The Hurricanes were off last week, but it really doesn't matter who wins this one…Miami 21, Ohio State 17

Utah at BYU: The teams have the same record, have put up similar points on opposing teams and will be a toss-up when deciding a winner. I pick the Utes because of quarterback Jordan Wynn after his 238-yard performance against USC last week...Utah 28, BYU 21

Stanford at Arizona: The Cardinal continues its quest to win the first ever Pac 12 championship, rolling over Arizona this weekend...Stanford 37, Arizona 14

Nicholls State at UL-Lafayette: The Ragin' Cajuns put up 34 points in their loss to Oklahoma State to start the season so points on Nicholls should not be a problem...ULL 34, Nicholls State 7
