Lady Tigers fizzle down the stretch

Northwestern edges No. 20 LSU 44-43 on late free throws with 11 seconds left

Morgan Jones made two free throws with 11 seconds left to give Northwestern a 44-43 victory over the No. 20-ranked LSU women Tuesday night.

The Lady Tigers' LaSondra Barrett missed the front end of a one-and-one with 30 seconds remaining to give the Wildcats one last chance at a victory. After Jones made her foul shots, LSU's Theresa Plaisance missed a 3-pointer with 2 seconds to play.

Brittany Orban scored 13 points to lead Northwestern (4-0) while Jones contributed 11 points and 9 rebounds.

Barrett had 11 points to lead the Lady Tigers (3-2).

Northwestern, which fell behind by nine points near the midway point of the second half, trailed 41-40 after Kendall Hackney made a jumper with 2:11 remaining in the game. Barrett then put LSU ahead by three points with two foul shots on the next possession.

The Wildcats had an opportunity to tie the score after Allison Mocchi was fouled while making a basket. However, Mocchi missed the free-throw attempt. Hackney grabbed the rebound, but Orban missed a layup.

Northwestern had another chance to take the lead after a turnover by Barrett. However, Tailor Jones missed a wide-open layup.

LSU seemed to take control of the game during a 5-minute stretch of the second half. After falling behind for the first time all night, Northwestern regained the lead at 24-23 on a basket by Hackney with 16:59 left. The Wildcats wouldn't score for another 5½ minutes.

Back-to-back baskets by Adrienne Webb gave LSU a 27-24 advantage. The Lady Tigers extended their lead to nine points on field goals by Bianca Lutley, Taylor Turnbow and Webb. In their scoreless streak, the Wildcats missed five shots and committed three turnovers.

However, Northwestern climbed back into the game by scoring seven consecutive points. A three-point play by Morgan Jones started the 7-0 run. A field goal by Danielle Diamant and two foul shots by Orban left the Wildcats behind 35-33 with 5:38 remaining.

LSU used a 9-1 run in the last 5 minutes to pull even with Northwestern at halftime. A basket by Orban put the Wildcats ahead 18-10 with 5 minutes remaining in the first half.

The Lady Tigers reduced their deficit to two points on two free throws by Jeanne Kenney and field goals by Krystal Forthan and Webb. One foul shot by Karly Roser pushed the Northwestern lead back to three points. LSU tied the score on two foul shots by Courtney Jones and one by Kenney.

After a second loss in three games, LSU is back in action Sunday when it travels to face No. 18 Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio, at 4 p.m.
