"It hasn't even hit me yet that I will be leaving here and working out at LSU with the team in about a month," Feist said. "I will be there when school starts back up. I'm really looking forward to it. I worked hard and I'm glad it paid off."
Feist and his family spent Friday and Saturday night in Baton Rouge, where the future Tiger got an up-close look at the inner workings of the nation's top-ranked program.
"It was nice to get a more overall view of the program," Feist said. "I came in with my family, but they spent time with the coaches and other families while we went out with the players.
"(Sophomore running back) Alfred Blue was my host, and we just chilled with other guys on the team and played games. I enjoyed just hanging out, because that's something that I like to do. Getting that feeling of what my new home will be like was my favorite part."
Feist said he also enjoyed the food, from dinner with Coach Les Miles and four other recruits at Texas de Brazil to an afternoon spent filling his belly with T.J. Ribs.
"I liked going out with everyone on Friday night, but getting T.J. Ribs catered to you is what I liked the most," Feist said. "That was some good food. I'm still feeling it. We ate pretty much the entire time. I'm sure that's how it will be when I get there next month."
By enrolling early, Feist and Lamar Louis will get a five-month head start on the rest of the 2012 linebacker class.
That learning period is one Feist hopes he can turn into early playing time on a linebacker unit that loses three seniors to graduation.
"This weekend I had a talk with Coach Miles about that, and then I had lunch and sat down with all the coaches and went over things," Feist said. "They talked about how they can't wait until I get there, and they asked if I am ready.
"I talked with (defensive coordinator John Chavis), but I always get to chat with him when I am on campus. We went to film practice and studied with the team, so that was different."
Following a senior campaign when West St. John made it to the state championship game against Ouachita Christian, Feist earned Defensive Player of the Year honors for Class 1A and is committed to play in the Under Armour All-American game in Orlando on Jan. 5.
The Edgard native will begin classes in Baton Rouge on Jan. 17.
