LSU stays after Kendell Beckwith

Will it be LSU or Alabama for East Feliciana's two-way standout? The answer may not come until January's Under Armour game, but the Tigers continue to press Beckwith early and often.

Kendell Beckwith's recruitment isn't a tough one to figure out.

There's LSU and there's Alabama.

"Those are still my top schools and have been for a while," Beckwith said. "I really like a lot about both places. That's why I am trying to take my time with my recruitment and find out as much as I can."

Beckwith, who said he has been on the LSU campus double-digit times and has already taken trips to Tuscaloosa four times in less than a year, has become well-versed with both programs, so he's beginning to get a feel of which program better suits his needs for playing football and getting a college degree.

"I have already gotten to be around LSU and Alabama a couple of times this spring, so that's been cool to do, and I've learned some more about how they want me to fit into things," Beckwith said. "I went to junior day weekends and spring practices, so that gave me a good feel of how they operate things and are going to be recruiting me.

"I went up to Alabama last Wednesday, and the weekend before that I came with my mom and brother to Baton Rouge for the LSU spring game. I had a good time at both places. And my mom likes both schools, so she is leaving it up to me."

Beckwith, a four-star prospect and the nation's No. 4-ranked outside linebacker, said the Tigers and Tide have both narrowed the approach to one position.

"LSU and Alabama are telling me I am an outside linebacker," Beckwith said. "LSU is even saying I am the only linebacker they want in the class.

"I am still playing quarterback and have been with the defensive line since ninth grade, but I think this spring I will be working with linebackers a good bit. It will give me some good looks as I get ready to play the position in college."

Beckwith said both teams are running even, thanks in part to the push from LSU running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Frank Wilson.

"We have a great relationship," Beckwith said. "We are both Louisiana guys, and we just clicked from the start. He has family over in St. Francisville, and we know a lot of the same people.

"That's been big for me with LSU, because he has always reached out and kept doing things to stay close."

Beckwith said word from Wilson was that East Feliciana High would be one of the coaching staff's opening stops on the recruiting trail later this month.

"Coach Frank said they are going to come see me first," Beckwith said. "I'm excited about that, for sure. We start practicing on May 8, but I know they will be out there before that."

As for a timetable, the month remains the same – though the destination for an announcement has now changed.

"I want to announce at an all-star game in January, at least that's what I am thinking about now," Beckwith said. "I was with the Army game, but now I switched to the Under Armour game. It's definitely an honor to even have the options, so I'm looking forward to it."
