Berniard has big-time offers

Geoff Berniard (6-foot-8, 310 pounds) is quickly moving up the recruiting charts as one of the top offensive tackle prospects in the South.

Berniard was on his way to a July 4 vacation in Florida, but his father took a little time to speak with Tiger Rag about his son's recruitment.

Geoff, a Lafayette-St. Thomas More product, has scholarship offers from some of the nation's top programs, but he is still waiting on one from a school very close to home.

"He has offers from Florida State, Mississippi State and Virginia Tech. Arkansas and Tennessee both said they would offer," said Geoff's father, Tom Berniard. "He never came out and told me but out of the ones he has offers from, he is probably leaning towards Mississippi State. He's waiting on an offer from LSU and it is still his top choice. If they would offer that is probably where he would end up going. So far, that is kind of what he has said."

According to Tom, LSU coaches told Geoff they wanted to see him in action a little more before an offer would come his way and he obliged them with a trip to Nick Saban's one-day lineman camp.

"He thought he did real well at the camp," Tom said. "He enjoyed it. He mentioned he went against someone that they already offered, the (Chris) Bowers kid, and he said he felt pretty good about what he did against him."

"It's close to home," Tom said in reference to LSU. "He also has a brother and sister that attend school there. He's been an LSU fan for years. If you live in the state of Louisiana and you're a football fan then you're an LSU fan."

Geoff has earned a reputation for being an aggressive player on the gridiron, but he also has good feet and he picks up blitzes well.

"He's an excellent, excellent pass blocker," Tom said. "He's probably a better pass blocker than he is a run blocker, although he's a pretty good run blocker, too. He's not real good if he gets in a 100-yard dash with you, but he's quick off his blocks."

Saban is known for going after the top prospects he can get inside Louisiana, and he may be hard-pressed to find a better tackle prospect who bleeds purple and gold like Geoff Berniard.
