A common theme Sunday night when the LSU players were in the early stages of celebrating their band-new regional championship was how eager the Tigers were to get to the next step of the NCAA Tournament.
Turns out top-ranked LSU won’t have to wait nearly as long as expected.
In a surprising move, the NCAA assigned the Tigers and the Cinderella team in this year’s tournament, Stony Brook, the earliest time slot available for the Super Regional round later this week.
The Tigers (46-16) and Seawolves (50-12) will collide at 11 a.m. Friday, 11 a.m. Saturday and noon Sunday, if necessary. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN2.
Although LSU has traditionally requested the earlier opening game in regional play, this is the first time the Tigers have been handed the early time slot at home for Super Regional games.
In 2008 when LSU hosted UC Irvine, the start times were 5 p.m., 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. and the first two games were different than the normal night games fans in Baton Rouge have been accustomed to.
Weather.com predicts temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s this weekend, with humidity in the 50-60% range. There are also scattered showers projected.
