Lucas' stock expected to rise

Baton Rouge (La.) Redemptorist running back Jay Lucas (5-11, 220, 4.5) is the 10th rated back in the country in TheInsiders initial rankings for the Class of 2004.

He has a few offers from some of the nation's top schools but his offer list will grow once he gets his academics in order.

Lucas sports a 3.1 grade point average and made a 14 on his first ACT attempt and that has forced some schools to take a wait and see approach.

"I've got offers from LSU, Florida State, Indiana and Northwestern State," Lucas told Tiger Rag. "I'm also looking at Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Clemson, Tennessee and Texas. I hear from those schools a lot but they want to see how I do during my senior year."

Out of that elite group of schools, Lucas said he is leaning to two for basically the same reasons.

"LSU and Florida State right now," he said. "I got to know the coaching staffs and meet some of the players, and they seemed real cool. They both have good academic facilities too."

Lucas wrapped up his camp schedule with a pair of in-state stops at LSU and Northwestern State, and now Lucas said he is working hard so he can help lead his team to another state championship.

"I've been lifting weights and going to camps," he said. "LSU's was pretty hard but I made it through the three-day camp. It helped me with my ball carrying. There's a certain way to hold the ball so you don't fumble."

Last season as a junior, Lucas led Redemptorist High School to a perfect 15-0 record and state championship. He rushed for 2,334 yards and 34 touchdowns. In the state title game, Lucas ran for 257 yards and four touchdowns.
