Montgomery carrying his new weight well

Freshman Travin Dural jumps in with the veteran receivers for the first time.

LSU was back at work Saturday morning, for the first time donning shoulder pads to go with helmets.

Sam Montgomery

Here a couple of quick thoughts and observations:

  • If Sam Montgomery has truly packed on 30 extra pounds, it's hard to tell because he looks more nimble than ever. Maybe having another year between him and the knee injury is a key as well.

  • The same first- and second-team offensive lines worked together again Saturday and there was some progress as some pulling was incorporated into the skeleton work. La'el Collins looks very comfortable coming around the corner in those situations and that could be a real weapon.

  • The receivers group had a good few sessions when the media was allowed to observe. Jarvis Landry was catching anything remotely close to him, Russell Shepard showed a nice knack for adjusting on some passes behind him and Kadron Boone shook off an early drop and made some nice grabs.

    Travin Dural

  • Freshman Travin Dural was a new addition to the veteran WR practice group, replacing Paul Turner.

  • Spencer Ware carried his weight a little better with the shoulder pads on than he looked without them. Also moved very well. May be a guy who needs some bulk in the middle to hold up.

  • During one RB drill when they were quick-stepping through cones, backup fullback Connor Neighbors drew some 'oohs' and 'aahs' from Michael Ford.

  • Travis Dickson was back with the older tight ends after he and Nic Jacobs swapped places on Friday. Tyler Edwards was not with the veteran group on Saturday. Dickson may have the best hands of the experienced TEs, but he doesn't look big enough to hold up as a blocker -- maybe more useful as an H-back.
