Johnson excited about Tiger team

Mickey Johnson is the sort of guy who walks around with a smile on his face. Once he steps on the football field, his demeanor changes quite a bit. The talented defensive tackle is part of an extremely physical group on the LSU depth chart. Johnson has put his best foot forward to show LSU defensive line coach Brick Haley that he is ready for the next step as a player.

"Things are coming along," said Johnson. "I need to get better at a lot of things.

"I am working hard on my technique. Coach (Brick Haley) tells me that once I get that down, that I am going to be a much better player."

One of Mickey's best friends and mentors is Anthony Johnson who Mickey calls the greatest chicken wing cook on campus.

In addition to sharing a room or a meal, the two Johnsons share a mutual admiration for each other.

Mickey considers himself one of Anthony's biggest fans.

"Freak always stands out," said Johnson. "He has taught me a lot and he's shown me a lot of things in the playbook.

"I spend time watching what he's doing, so I know that I'm straight."

The Tigers possess an embarrassment of wealth on the defensive line, but Johnson reports that the group has spent a lot of time working on self improvement.

"Our whole defensive line has worked hard in drills and just learned to get better this summer," said Johnson. "We've worked hard in practices.

"As a defensive front we have to be in shape. The defensive line is the foundation. If you don't have a good front the whole defense can fall apart.

"I feel like our front is going to be a real strength for our team this year."
