Lawson in 'Good Shape' to Qualify

The LSU coaching staff opened the contact period with a visit to 2013 commit Tevin Lawson. He discussed the visit and his current academic situation in this update.

Les Miles and defensive line coach Brick Haley made the short trip to Denham Springs on Monday to meet with 2013 commit Tevin Lawson.

The coaches spent about an hour and a half meeting with Lawson and his family.

"It was good," Lawson said. "My mom's happier than I am.

"[We discussed] the things I want to accomplish while I'm at LSU," Lawson continued, "what I want to major in, people being able to help me whenever I need it and what I'm expected to do."

Part of what he's expected to is get his grades in order. Lawson has often been rumored as one of the possible academic casualties of the 2013 class. Lawson said he's currently in "good shape" to qualify with a 2.5 GPA.

He will retake the ACT on Dec. 8, and said he needs an overall score of 18.

"I need to get my reading up," Lawson said. "But other than that, everything else is good."

If Lawson does qualify, he could find himself in a mix of young defensive tackles hoping to compete for early playing time at a position LSU could be lacking depth. The Tigers will lose senior Josh Downs and possibly junior Bennie Logan to the NFL.

"There are more young people coming in," Lawson said. "It's just going to come down to who works the hardest."
