Edna Karr High School finished a perfect season tonight going 14-0 and defeating Neville High School to take home the 4A State Championship in a battle of unbeaten teams.
Edna Karr was led by Junior Devante "Speedy" Noil and Senior running back Jeremy Jamison. Jamison was named MVP of the game for Edna Karr, and it was well deserved. Jamison finished the game with 129 yards and two touchdowns. He also sealed the game for Karr with his 53 yard touchdown run with just over four minutes to go in the game to put Karr up 29-22.
This game went back and forth all night long. Neville struck first with a 15 yard touchdown pass from John Diarse to Andre Fulller. Diarse finished the game tonight with 148 yards and one touchdown on the ground to go along with 151 and another touchdown through the air.
Karr answered the Diarse touchdown with a Jamison touchdown and two point conversion to go ahead 8-7 early in the game.
Neville pulled ahead 10-8 with a field goal by Brian Barefoot (3-4 on the night) late in the second quarter, only to be answered once again by a Karr touchdown. This time it was a 20 yard pass from Noil to Glenn Irons, putting Karr up 15-10 before half. Noil finished the contest tonight with 143 yards and one touchdown through the air. Noil also added 18 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Neville was able to add another field goal before half to make the score 15-13. Neville also came out and struck first in the second half, scoring to make the score 19-15 towards the end of the third quarter.
The Edna Karr defense showed up to play tonight with one goal in mind: contain John Diarse. While it doesn't appear as though they did that in the stat column, Neville was only able to produce two touchdowns, despite numerous chances at the end zone.
The fourth quarter was perhaps the most exciting time of the game, with both teams trading blows. Noil had a one yard run to put Karr back on top 21-19, only to have Barefoot connect on 45 yard field goal to put Neville ahead 22-21.
As it was said before, the game was sealed when Jamison took the ball and raced 53 yards to the endzone with just over four minutes to go in the game. This is all Karr would need with the way their defense performed on such a special night.
Junior Gerald Willis spent most of his night in the backfield chasing Diarse around. He finished with 5.5 tackles with one sack and 2 tackles for loss. Willis explained that this was the best night of his life.
"You know, winning the title is the best night of my life," said Willis. "I can't even explain the feelings that are going through my mind right now. I spent most of my night chasing [John] Diarse around, so I am tired. He played great, but I am really glad we came out with the victory."
