Weekend Preview: Nkemdiche Watch

This is the weekend LSU fans have been waiting for. LSU will finally get Robert Nkemdiche on campus with one last chance to impress him before National Signing Day. Get the full rundown of how the recruiting weekend plans to shape up in this preview.

The weekend got much more important Thursday night.

Robert Nkemdiche, the nation's No. 1 recruit, tweeted late Thursday he would be making that much-anticipated official visit to LSU. Since he announced Ole Miss and LSU as his leaders at the Under-Armour All-American Game, fans have been pining to get this five-star DE on campus.

It now appears that LSU will get that chance. Nkemdiche tweeted Friday morning he was on his way to Baton Rouge and is expected to arrive on campus around 6 p.m. Friday evening and stay through the weekend. After official visits to Florida and Ole Miss, this is a great opportunity for LSU to make a big push the weekend before National Signing Day.

Persistence paid off for the LSU staff, which never gave up pressing Nkemdiche to make a visit. After his visit to Ole Miss last weekend, reports came out quoting his father that Nkemdiche had shut down his recruitment and wouldn't take any more visits.

LSU kept consistent contact throughout the week with both Nkemdiche and his father, and that paid off as the group locked down a visit late Thursday.

David Kamara, a three-star DB and high school teammate of Nkemdiche, will also make the trip to Baton Rouge this weekend. Kamara confirmed Friday morning that he was travelling with Nkemdiche. Kamara does not yet hold an offer from LSU and is expected to go the JUCO route.

But Nkemdiche and Kamara are close friends, and impressing both this weekend would go a long way for LSU landing the nation's top prospect.

Though most still consider Ole Miss a heavy favorite to land Nkemdiche, an official visit to Baton Rouge will go a long way for LSU. Especially with the timing, the staff hopes this trip gives Nkemdiche something to reconsider regarding his college decision.

According to reports, the LSU staff will host one other official visitor this weekend. 2013 commit Jeremy Cutrer is expected on campus after not making it in for an official last weekend. Cutrer is not likely to qualify academically though, and is expected to sign with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College next week.

The staff hoped to get one other prospect on campus this weekend for an official visit, but that doesn't look to be the case. LSU pressed Nebraska commit Cethan Carter to get a visit, but Carter has said he is firmly committed to the Cornhuskers, according to his coach. Carter currently holds a greyshirt offer from LSU, and unless the staff decides to upgrade that to a full 2013 offer, it looks like Carter will sign with Nebraska next week.

Aside from Nkemdiche, LSU's next biggest target will make one last visit before NSD. Tashawn Bower, a soft Auburn commit, will make an unofficial visit to Auburn this weekend. Bower made it public he would weigh his options after the coaching staff at Auburn was released, but he hasn't ruled them out either. Bower said he always felt comfortable at Auburn, and if he feels that same vibe this weekend from the new coaches, expect Bower to strongly consider sticking with his commitment. Bower will announce his decision on Signing Day.

Dontrill Hyman, a teammate of Quantavius Leslie at Hinds CC, will make a visit to West Virginia this weekend. Last week, Hyman said on Twitter that he hoped to make a trip to Baton Rouge, but went on to say he never heard from the staff about setting up a visit. It doesn't appear that he's being targeted in this class.
