Although he has been around the LSU program for the last several years, Rickey Jefferson got to experience the feeling of officially joining the Tiger family today. The 6-0 185 pound Jefferson spent his signing day at a small signing ceremony held for athletes from his area. Although he didn't have a large ceremony, Jefferson explained that it was nice getting to share the moment with friends and family, while also learning what is expected of him when he moves on to LSU.
"We just had a little ceremony at the satellite center across the river," said Jefferson. "There were a few other guys from our rival school that all signed with me. We had a little ceremony with our superintendent and the head of our parish."
"They said some encouraging words and how proud they were of us. They really explained that we have to focus on our education as well as represent the area."
While he has been around the LSU program for a long time, Jefferson explained that he was overwhelmed with excitement when it came time to sign his name on the line.
"It has been my dream for a really long time to play for LSU," said Jefferson. "It didn't really take me long to decide that LSU was where I wanted to be."
"I worked very hard to get there and I'm ready to work harder. I built great relationships with the coaches and coach [Les] Miles is like family. I've been around them for a long time."
After signing with LSU, Jefferson explained that a feeling of relief came over him. Jefferson committed to LSU in July of 2012, and he thought signing day would never come.
"It was a really long wait with a lot of anticipation," said Jefferson. "After knowing them for so long, it is nice to be a part of the family. It is a blessing, but I have a lot of responsibility now with where I'm at."
Even though he was relieved to officially join the LSU family, Jefferson explained that he is getting anxious about reporting to campus in June.
"I'm dying to get there," said Jefferson. "I wish I was going today. It will come in due time. I just have to keep working hard. I should be getting the defensive stuff soon and I'm going to start learning that immediately. I'm ready to make a name for myself and really work on accomplishing my dreams."
Jefferson also got a chance to speak with his future coaches after faxing in his paperwork. The Destrehan High School product explained that his discussions with the LSU staff simply capped off what was great day for him.
"I talked to them on the phone when I faxed over the papers," said Jefferson. "They were telling me how excited they were. It was a great feeling and it was the best day of my life."
The future defensive back explained that he has dreamed of playing at LSU for quite some time, something that he has really wanted to accomplish since his brother, Jordan, was the starting quarterback for the Tigers.
"I have always wanted to be a Tiger, especially after my brother went there," said Jefferson. "I'm going to learn from the coaches, get my education, and look to excel in my career."
