After one week of baseball around the SEC, some teams lived up to their preseason rankings, while others had some minor slip ups. One thing that was learned about the SEC in week one is that the conference is dominating the national rankings. Currently, the SEC has nine teams in the top-30 for college baseball. Here are the SEC power rankings after week one.
1) LSU (2)
This weekend: Home vs. BYU and Southeastern Louisiana
After opening the 2013 season by sweeping Maryland, the Tigers look to extend their winning streak at home this weekend against BYU and Southeastern Louisiana. It should be a good test for a pitching staff that proved it could be dominant in the series against Maryland.
2) Arkansas (3)
This weekend: Home vs. Evansville (IN)
Arkansas started off 2013 by taking two out of three from Western Illinois and then winning a two game series against the University of New Orleans. The Razorbacks will look to build off of last weekend when they host Evansville, a team that competes for a regional spot year in and year out. After a loss on the opening weekend, Arkansas dropped a couple of spots in the national polls.
3) Vanderbilt (4)
This weekend: Home vs. Monmouth (NJ)
The Commodores played Long Beach State last weekend and took two out of three from the Dirtbags. They followed that up with wins over Belmont and Central Arkansas. Vanderbilt plays host to Monmouth this weekend and it should be a good tune up for them heading into the heart of their schedule.
4) South Carolina (7)
This weekend: Home vs. Albany
South Carolina played host to Liberty University over the weekend and took two out of three games. After not playing during the week, the Gamecocks will look to improve on last weekend against Albany at home.
5) Kentucky (11)
This weekend: Plays Kansas State, Elon, and Coastal Carolina
After victories against UNC-Ashville, Niagra, and South Carolina-Upstate, the Wildcats will get a true test this weekend. They travel to Myrtle Beach to take on Kansas State, Elon, and Coastal Carolina. Wildcat fans should get a pretty good gauge of where their team stands after this weekend.
6) Mississippi State (13)
This weekend: Home vs. Purdue and Samford for a four game weekend.
The Bulldogs swept a four game series against Portland over the weekend. They followed that up with a victory over Grambling State during the week. Mississippi State plays host to Samford and Purdue this weekend, playing both teams twice.
7) Florida (17)
This weekend: Home vs. Florida Gulf Coast
The Gators have had somewhat of a surprise start to 2013. They took two out of three from a Duke team that they were expected to sweep. Florida followed that up with a victory against UCF, only to lose to Georgia Southern a day later. They play host to Florida Gulf Coast this weekend in what should be a good series for the Gators to find some consistency.
8) Ole Miss (18)
This weekend: Home vs. Rhode Island
The Rebels began 2013 by sweeping a three game series from TCU, following that up with a victory over UT-Martin. Ole Miss is off to a hot start and will likely continue their winning ways this weekend when the host Rhode Island in Oxford.
9) Texas A&M (26)
This weekend: Home vs. Pepperdine
Perhaps the most surprising loss of opening weekend around the SEC came when Texas A&M was defeated by Illinois-Chicago during their three game series. The aggies bounced back to win the series, as well as games against Stephen F. Austin and Texas Southern. They play host to an undefeated Pepperdine squad that is sure to test the Aggies this weekend.
This weekend: At Florida Atlantic
Alabama came into the 2013 season as one of the less talked about teams in the SEC. The Crimson Tide squad was very efficient in their opening series against the Virginia Military Institute and their weekday victory over Southern Miss. They travel to Florida Atlantic this weekend to play an Owl squad that is 3-1 on the year.
This weekend: Home vs. Middle Tennessee State, College of Charleston, and Indiana State
The Tigers of Auburn played a four game series against Maine over the weekend and won all four games. The Tigers will look to make a move into the polls after this weekend with them hosting Kansas State, College of Charleston, and Indiana State in what should be somewhat of a defining weekend.
This weekend: Home vs. Belmont
The Bulldogs lost two out of three to Georgia Southern over the weekend. They followed that up with another loss to Kennesaw State. Georgia will look to get back on track in 2013 this weekend when they play host to Belmont.
This weekend: Home vs. Arizona State
Tennessee traveled out to Las Vegas for their opening series against UNLV. They lost three out of four to the Rebels in the process. This weekend won't prove to be any easier as the Volunteer play host to Arizona State, ranked 22 in the most recent polls.
This weekend: At Memphis
Missouri is not off to the start they had hoped for in 2013. They were swept by Southern Miss to open the season. They now travel to Memphis to take on the Tigers in search of their first victory of the season.
