Sometimes players do it for the program.
After winning a 97-94 thriller over Alabama in triple overtime Saturday, senior guard Charles Carmouche said he and the Tigers did it not only to avenge their loss in Tuscaloosa Feb. 9 but to make amends for the LSU football team's painful defeat at the hands of the Crimson Tide this fall.
"We owed it to 'em," said Carmouche of Alabama. "So we just kept fighting."
And LSU (16-9, 7-7) once again had to claw back from quite a way down. The Tigers were in a 10-point hole, 69-59, with 3:37 remaining after a Levi Randolph lay-up.
Johnny Jones' squad was as resilient as ever, mounting a 10-0 run to end regulation tied, even after Johnny O'Bryant missed a potential game-winner at the buzzer.
O'Bryant finished with a team-high 24 points and 10 rebounds, doing most of his damage - including some clutch free throws - in the overtime periods.
LSU also got 20 points and 11 rebounds from Carmouche, who got the start in place of Andre Stringer after being disciplined and only playing three minutes at Tennessee on Tuesday.
Anthony Hickey also chipped in 13 points, five rebounds, seven assists and five steals.
Alabama (18-9, 10-4) got a career performance from Trevor Releford, who scored a game-high 36 points on 14-of-18 shooting. He started the game off making 11 of his first 12 baskets.
But it wasn't enough for the Tide. In the end LSU dragged away a much-needed win in the first-ever triple-overtime game contested in the PMAC (for the men's program).
