2014 LB Donnie Alexander (New Orleans, LA) decided to make a trip to Baton Rouge Saturday.
He had some Edna Karr teammates participating in the Louisiana State Indoor Track Championships, and he also wanted to get some always-valuable face-time with the LSU coaches. Alexander had built a solid relationship with Frank Wilson over the last couple years, and he got to meet with him Saturday night.
Alexander was not expecting the news he received when he got to campus.
"I was making a visit to see the coaches," Alexander said. "When I got up there, Coach Frank told me they were going to offer me."
That served as a dream come true for Alexander, and the offer left him speechless.
"I was shocked because growing up, I always wanted to go to LSU and play for them," Alexander said. "I never really thought it was going to happen, but when he told me [they had offered] I didn't know what to say."
Alexander didn't wait long to pull the trigger and add his name to LSU's list of 2014 commitments. When he returned home, Alexander called Wilson to report that he had committed to LSU (Alexander also had offers from Illinois and Minnesota).
Alexander still hasn't gotten a chance to speak to Les Miles, but added he couldn't be happier to commit to LSU.
"I just love their defense," Alexander said. "They remind me of my team at Edna Karr because of that purple and gold…I fit in good with the defense because it's similar to ours. I have the speed and I'm a big tackler."
Alexander starred as an outside linebacker for Edna Karr in 2012, helping the Cougars to the Class 4A State Championship. He projects to play that same position at LSU, and could potentially even move to safety in John Chavis' defense.
He said he added about 15-20 pounds in his junior year, bulking up to 6-foot-1, 202 pounds. He also said he's been timed at 4.6 seconds in the 40-yard dash.
That blend of size and speed already points to him fitting in well at LSU, but he hopes to add at least 10 pounds over the spring and summer.
"I'm just hoping to get bigger while still maintaining my speed, and hopefully get even faster."
Alexander has already been to LSU several times for camps and games. And he said now that he's a commit, he'll be there all the time.
"I'm going to be going there a lot now," Alexander said. "I'd like to come for camp, but I'll probably just come to hang around and see a few practices."
For LSU, adding a commit from Edna Karr could serve as the start of a very favorable pipeline. LSU has its sights set on two of Edna Karr's best — Gerald Willis and Devante Noil.
Alexander said he's going to make it his job to have them join him at LSU.
"I'm really close with those two," Alexander said. "Getting to play with them at LSU would be big."
