Coach's Corner: Destrehan Standouts

With early offers on the table from Tulane, Donovan Isom and Rae Juan Marbley are still in the very early stages of their recruitments. Coach Stephen Robicheaux spoke with TSD regarding his star players and how he believes that their recruitments will play out.

For Destrehan High School coach Stephen Robicheaux, the upcoming football season gives him a lot to be excited about. Robicheaux will lead a Destrehan team in 2013 that has playmakers on both sides of the football, in quarterback Donovan Isom and linebacker Rae Juan Marbley. Isom, a prospect that stands at around 6-4 and 235 pounds, has seen his recruitment pick up in recent months, just as the 6-0 215 pound Marbley has. While they are both very talented prospects on the gridiron, Robicheaux believes that there other factors that make Isom and Marbley great players.

"The greatest attribute about both is that they are great kids and leaders," Robicheaux told TSD. "They make everyone around them better. They are both great guys in the weight room. With their attitude and mentality, they should be great for us this year. They lead by example."

Isom has seen interest from colleges pick up in recent weeks, with a couple of offers coming through from Louisiana schools. Aside from the two offers that Isom already has, Robicheaux believes that there will almost certainly be more on the way for him, especially since he received an invite to a prestigious showcase event.

"Donovan has been offered by LA Tech, Tulane, and Alabama has made calls to me," said Robicheaux. "Missouri and Ole Miss are going to get visits from him. I think he will be a big time recruit before is all said and done because he got invited to the Elite 11."

Marbley has also seen his recruitment pick up, as he received an offer from Tulane recently. Robicheaux explained that he has had a hard time trying to figure out where to play Marbley because he is productive at multiple positions on defense, something that could be beneficial to schools that are unsure of where he will line up in college.

"RaeJuan has an offer from Tulane," said Robicheaux. "He is excited about the offer from Tulane. Marbley is a versatile kid that we are still trying to figure out where to play him. He is such a good pass rusher that we just kind of cut him loose. He can play outside or inside and his motor doesn't stop."

One school that has been in contact with Isom early in the process is LSU. Isom recently took a trip to LSU for one of their junior days, but did not come away with an offer from the Tigers.

Even though Isom hasn't received an offer from LSU, Robicheaux believes that the discussions between the two parties have been productive. Robicheaux also explained that Frank Wilson has taken the lead in the recruitment of Isom for LSU.

"LSU, and especially Frank, has stayed in pretty good contact with Donovan," said Robicheaux. "I would say that LSU has offers out to 2 or 3 guys right now. The quarterback position is tough because LSU likes to evaluate guys before they offer them. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out."

For both Isom and Marbley, the LSU camp will be an ideal time to show the coaching staff their talents on the gridiron. Robicheaux believes that things between the Tigers and his top two prospects will become a lot clearer following a good performance at camp over the summer, especially for Isom.

"I think they both are planning on going," said Robicheaux. "I think the camp will be big for Donovan. A good performance by him could answer some of the questions they have about him."

"Marbley is also looking forward to competing in front of those guys. He always talks about getting an LSU offer, and if he gets one, he will be tickled pink."

Aside from their plans to attend camp at LSU, Robicheaux knows of several visits that his players will take over the course of the next few months.

"The only ones planned for Donovan are Alabama, Tulane, and Missouri," said Robicheaux. "Oklahoma State may get one as well. He is still trying to figure out exactly where he wants to visit, but I would lean towards those. Marbely will visit Tulane and Georgia Tech."

Robicheaux also added that it would be quite a while before either Isom or Marbley makes a decision because they are in the very early stages of their recruitments.
