Kelly Oubre and his family left New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and relocated to Houston, but he has never forgotten his hometown and still keeps in close contact with his childhood friends. He counts Louisiana prep stars Jordan Cornish of Brother Martin and Tyree Griffin of OP Walker as close friends.
Oubre even consider playing AAU basketball this summer with Cornish and the Baton Rouge-based Louisiana Red Storm. However, with the obvious travel issues and time constraints, he decided to remain with the Houston Hoops.
Another Louisiana connection that Oubre, a 4-star wing in the Class of 2014, is considering is LSU basketball. LSU coach Johnny Jones and assistant David Patrick have been recruiting him since they were hired at LSU last year. He took an unofficial visit to LSU last summer, and then took another with his father to attend the LSU-Alabama football game in the fall.
"They have been recruiting me extremely hard," Oubre told TSD by phone, following a late night Houston Hoops practice. "The facilities are very nice and the campus is great. I like the coaches and the way they coach."
Besides LSU, Oubre is considering a long list of schools, such as Texas, Baylor, UCLA, Connecticut, Kansas, Arizona, Florida, Alabama, Ohio State and North Carolina.
He said he plans to cut his list down to about five schools in the summer and begin taking his official visits in the fall. He said he plans to sign in the spring.
"It's not going to be a rush job," said Oubre.
Asked what the important factors are that he will be considering, Oubre said: "The environment, coaching staff, academics, and the people that have come out of the system."
