There wasn't a whole lot to take away from LSU's 16-2 throttling of Southern on Wednesday night.
The Tigers scored its highest run total of the season on 16 hits while the Jaguars committed eight errors. It was only close for about one inning before overmatched Southern just didn't have much answer for LSU.
The Tigers have now won 14 straight games — including a 11-2 victory against Southern on Tuesday in the Wally Pontiff Classic — heading into a pivotal SEC series this weekend against Arkansas.
"We were really trying to push through these games," Mason Katz said. "We did a good job of not worrying about the weekend. We took it one game at a time, playing each game hard."
Southern did actually grab a quick lead in the first inning off freshman starter Hunter Devall, who hit the second hitter he faced. The runner advanced to second on a wild pitch then scored on a RBI-single by Kevin Williams.
But LSU didn't trail for long as the Tigers batted around the order in the first inning for the third consecutive game. Alex Bregman, who extended his hitting streak to 22 games, Katz and Michael Barash all drove in runs in that first inning, before LSU tacked on two more in the second to blow the game open.
Southern did get an unearned run back in the third, but the Jaguars never had a chance after a seven-run fourth inning from LSU.
LSU had another big inning in the sixth, scoring three runs, then tacked on one final tally in the seventh.
Every position player appeared in the game for LSU, with 12 different Tigers recording hits. Even relief pitcher Nate Fury played second base in the ninth inning.
LSU also trotted out seven different pitchers as the bullpen got a little tuneup heading into the weekend.
