LSU offers Newberry

New Mexico Junior College point guard Jeff Newberry is a coveted prospect on the JuCo level in 2014. Tuesday, the Atlanta native got an offer from LSU. Newberry talks about the offer and his new timeline with TSD's Matt McCurdy.

New LSU basketball assistant coach Korey McCray is quickly making use of his Atlanta connections on the recruiting trail, offering junior college point guard Jeff Newberry a scholarship on Tuesday night.

Newberry is a native of Atlanta and a former Ole Miss player currently at New Mexico Junior College. He redshirted at Ole Miss, prior to playing his freshman year at Northeast Oklahoma Junior College.

McCray called Newberry to make the offer and informed him that LSU head coach Johnny Jones would be calling him Wednesday morning to solidify the offer.

"LSU might be a good situation," Newberry told TSD just minutes after receiving the offer from McCray. "(LSU is a) very respected program and a place that needs a guy like me."

Besides LSU, he has received offers so far from Oklahoma State, West Virginia, Rhode Island, Texas-El Paso and many others. He has visited only West Virginia so far.

He had originally planned to commit in September, but the recent flurry of offers has made him rethink his plans.

"I'm pushing my date back now," he said. "No set date now."

Newberry is considered to be a potential top 5 player in the junior college ranks.

At the recent All-American JUCO Showcase in Las Vegas, Newberry was among the standouts, along with former LSU commit Deng Deng of Lee College and Lake Charles native Josh Gray of Odessa College (formerly of Texas Tech).
