Martin on track to play Friday

TSD publisher Ben Love has the latest news from inside LSU Basketball, including Jarell Martin's status with his sprained ankle and how the backcourt rotation is shaping up for Coach Johnny Jones.

After sitting out all but the opening 33 seconds of the first three games of his college career, LSU freshman forward Jarell Martin (sprained ankle) is expected to re-join the Tigers Friday night with Southeastern in town.

Martin has sat out practice lately, but the former McDonald's All-American will give it a go Thursday afternoon and, according to LSU Coach Johnny Jones, is on track to play tomorrow in the team's final game before the Old Spice Classic in Orlando.

"Jarell will play tomorrow provided things go smoothly today," said Jones. "We just want to make sure he can do it at the pace as well."

While the Tiger sideline boss is ecstatic to get back his five-star signee, Jones admits he isn't sure which facets of Martin's game will surface first.

"Jarell is such a multi-dimensional player. He's capable of creating opportunities for other players. He's a good rebounder, can slash to the basket, is used to playing inside, his mid-range game and he can knock down the three," Jones explained. "I'm not sure which of those we'll have a chance to see tomorrow because he hasn't been practicing. The speed of the game could affect him a little bit."

In other news, Jones announced that sophomore guard Malik Morgan will not play against Southeastern, still suffering the effects of an injury picked up near halftime of the UNO game Tuesday night.
