SEC Media Days, the unofficial kickoff to college football down south, is underway in Hoover, Ala., with commissioner Mike Slive set to take to the podium Monday along with head coaches at Auburn (Gus Malzahn), Florida (Will Muschamp) and Vanderbilt (Derek Mason).
LSU will take center stage Wednesday around 1 p.m., and TSD will have wire-to-wire coverage of the Tigers' turn at The Wynfrey Hotel.
TSD recently voted Collins, a Baton Rouge native, the No. 1 overall player on the Tigers' roster heading into the 2014 season. The 6-foot-5, 315-pounder has played in 32 games in his LSU career, making 25 starts. He'll be counted on to protect the blind side of a new quarterback in 2014.
Magee, who ended up sixth on TSD's top 25 countdown, began to make waves in the backfield a season ago, rushing for 626 yards and providing an ideal counterpart to lead back Jeremy Hill. This season the Franklinton product will shoulder a heavier load with Hill off to the NFL. He and fellow senior Kenny Hilliard will also show the ropes to freshman phenom Leonard Fournette.
The elder statesmen of the group, Welter is preparing for his fifth season in the purple and gold. Coming in at No. 20 on our countdown, Welter enters year two as a starter at Mike linebacker, where he finished with 80 tackles in 2013. Like Magee above, Welter will also be responsible for teaching a young stud in Clifton Garrett.
