Shipley, Womack to sign Friday with LSU

LSU commits Hanner Shipley and Matt Womack will officially ink with the Tigers on Friday when they sign financial aid agreements.

LSU commits Hanner Shipley and Matt Womack will sign financial aid agreements with the Tigers on Friday.

Shipley and Womack are taking advantage of a policy that went into effect last fall that permits recruits intending to enroll early to sign starting Aug. 1 of their senior year. That grants the school unlimited contact with the signees, and binds the program to uphold their scholarship offer to the prospect.

Both plan to sign their FAAs later this afternoon, Shipley at 3 p.m. and Womack around 3:30 p.m.

Shipley committed to LSU in January shortly after receiving an offer from the Tigers. He ranks as a three-star tight end that will primarily be a blocker in LSU's offense. Though he has family ties to nearby Texas, Shipley said it's long been his dream to play for LSU and Friday will be a big step in making that come true.

"It's really exciting," Shipley said. "I called Coach [Steve] Ensminger last night, and he said 'Are you ready to become a Tiger?' I got chills when he said that. It is a great feeling to have an opportunity to go graduate early and go through spring football to play for the LSU Tigers. I can't wait."

The benefits of enrolling early are clear. Prospects get a head start on their classes and have the opportunity to go through spring practices with the team.

Shipley figures to be the replacement for current TE Dillon Gordon, who will enter his senior season in 2015. Shipley will start competing for playing time once he arrives in January.

"I think it will be awesome to be able to care of part of my freshman year of school this spring, but even more important is being able to practice with the guys and learn the system," Shipley said. "Coach [Les] Miles told me when I committed that I would need to graduate early to come in and learn all the plays because I have a great chance of getting a lot of playing time as a freshman."

Womack will be the other LSU commit to sign Friday. He pledged to the Tigers on July 20, becoming LSU's first offensive tackle committed in the 2015 class. He's a massive prospect, 6-foot-7, 325 pounds, and projects as a right tackle on the next level.

"I'm very excited to get the recruiting process over," Womack said. "Going in January will help so much, going through spring ball and being around the team all summer. I'm going to work hard so maybe I can help come fall."
