Travonte Valentine expects clearance Tuesday

The lone signee from LSU's 2014 recruiting class yet to report to campus expects to receive clearance from the NCAA next week.

LSU defensive tackle signee Travonte Valentine expects to receive his clearance from the NCAA on Tuesday, according to his coach Mike Tunsil.

Valentine is the lone member of LSU's 2014 signing class yet to report to campus. He's still awaiting the final word from the NCAA Eligibility Center before he can report to campus, and his camp expects that to come within the next week.

"We're expecting great news," Tunsil said.

LSU is eagerly awaiting the arrival of one of their top recruits from the previous cycle. Valentine was a four-star recruit, ranked as the No. 2 defensive tackle in the nation.

LSU sorely needs depth at that position, especially after news surfaced Friday that projected starter Quentin Thomas will miss the entire 2014 season with a torn bicep. Aside from Thomas, Christian Lacouture is the only other player at that position with significant playing experience, ahead of three other members of the 2013 signing class Maquedius Bain, Greg Gilmore and Frank Herron.

Valentine will have an opportunity to crack that rotation as a freshman depending on how long it takes him to adapt once he arrives to campus. According to NCAA rules, he will have to go through four non-contact practices before he can give it a full go. LSU practiced for the first time in full pads this fall on Friday.

LSU will be willing to accept that slight delay should they get him on campus next week as expected.
