2016 safety Eric Monroe has been to Baton Rouge, spent time on LSU’s campus but he’d never seen the Tigers in action until this past weekend.
Monroe made the short drive to NRG Stadium on Saturday to see the Tigers open the 2014 season with a comeback victory against Wisconsin. Monroe’s from Galena Park, a suburb east of Houston, close enough that he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see LSU play.
Seated in the lower level, Monroe watched the LSU defense — particularly the secondary — fuel the Tigers’ rally.
“That game was crazy,” Monroe said. They had a great comeback. The atmosphere was nice. It was live. The fans hyped up their defense. That’s when they turned on, and that was it.”
Those fans left a big impression on Monroe. He said he’ll “most definitely” be back in Baton Rouge this fall to see what they’re really like in the newly expanded Death Valley.
In the meantime, he can envision himself suiting up in LSU’s infamous secondary.
“They balled out,” Monroe said. “They looked like us on Friday nights. I totally see myself in that defense. They get hyped.”
Monroe already ranks as a four-star prospect, the No. 4 safety in the country for 2016. He’s been on LSU’s radar for a while now, earning an offer during a three-day stay for the Tigers’ June camp.
“It was a blessing,” Monroe said of getting an LSU offer. “I had been working for it for it, and I went down there to LSU and got the offer…The atmosphere was great, and the people were showing me love. It’s DBU.”
Monroe said he brings versatility to the secondary, capable of playing any defensive back position.
“If they need me at corner or safety,” he said, “I’m the guy.”
Monroe already has a long list of offers that includes schools like UCLA, Ohio State, Michigan State, Oklahoma State and South Carolina among others. He said he’s most familiar right now with nearby Texas and Texas A&M (where he’ll visit Saturday), though LSU is right there with that lead group.
He’s in no hurry to make a decision though and is still taking it all in. He said his relationship with the coaching staff and comfort with the program will ultimately be what makes him ready to commit.
“I’m just blessed to have all these offers,” Monroe said. “I’m taking it slow, step-by-step. That’s where I am. I’m not in a hurry.”
