LSU running back Leonard Fournette was named SEC Freshman of the Week, while linebacker Kendell Beckwith received the Defensive Player of the Week honor, as announced by the conference on Monday.
This is the second time this season Fournette has earned this particular award. He led LSU in rushing in a 10-7 victory against Ole Miss on Saturday, racking up 113 yards on the ground, an average of 4.9 per attempt. He also had two catches for 41 yards (including a 40-yard reception) and 57 more yards in the return game to give him 211 all-purpose.
It was his third 100-yard rushing game of the season and his second with more than 200 all-purpose yards.
Fournette picked up the same honor after the win against Florida two weeks ago in what was his first career start. The former No. 1 overall recruit has emerged as the Tigers' featured back. He has 657 rushing yards this season with seven touchdowns.
Beckwith led LSU in tackles Saturday against the Rebels with 10, including three unassisted. He also had one tackle for loss, a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry.
Beckwith was in on the tackle that resulted in a turnover on downs on Ole Miss' second to last offensive possession.
He has now made three consecutive starts at middle linebacker, replacing D.J. Welter as the man at the heart of John Chavis' defense. He ranks third on the team with 52 tackles, including four for loss and 1.5 sacks. He has three pass breakups, two quarterback hurries and has also recovered a fumble.
Fournette and Beckwith become the fourth and fifth players to receive SEC weekly honors this season. Brandon Harris was named SEC Freshman of the Week for his performance against New Mexico State. Fournette has now twice been named SEC Freshman of the Week. Vadal Alexander earned SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week honors after the Florida game.
