LSU freshman Travonte Valentine continues to wait, and it seems he'll continue to do so through the end of the season.
The four-star signee from LSU's 2014 class has not appeared in a game this season, becoming one of the larger mysteries of the year. First, he was cleared by the NCAA Eligibility Center in August. Then, the SEC decided to take another look at his academic record, putting his eligibility back on hold.
He did practice with the team during the week but was not allowed to appear in a game until receiving a positive resolution from the conference. Then there was the situation of him maybe or maybe not going through pregame warmups before Kentucky.
Through all this, it's remained pretty unclear when or if Valentine would ever suit up for the Tigers in 2014.
On Tuesday, Les Miles gave his most definitive statement yet that Valentine will likely not play this season.
"I don't imagine he'll see any action anytime soon," Miles said. "Unless we get some unusual communicated information."
That would mean Valentine's destined for a redshirt, expected at this point but no doubt a disappointment for the No. 2 defensive tackle in the 2014 class.
Valentine will likely be one of six redshirts for LSU's freshmen. Garrett Brumfield, William Clapp, Jacory Washington, Tony Upchurch and Trey Lealaimatafao — who suffered a gruesome preseason injury — are the other true freshmen to not appear in a game this season.
Miles said Tuesday it's certainly possible those six players all redshirt, but he admits anything can happen that would change their status.
"Some guys fit a red shirt pretty comfortably right now," Miles said. "But I mean it very honestly, there's a point in time with three games left to go, and an opportunity presents itself, I'm not ready to say anybody is redshirting at this point. Those six guys might fit that redshirt nicely, but I'm not ready to make that decision."
